Petrol loses its crown as alternative fuels overtake it in India’s record August auto sales

August 2026 marked a historic milestone in India's auto retail market, exceeding all previous records. In a significant shift, alternative fuel vehicles eclipsed petrol sales in the passenger vehicle category. Rural markets had a remarkable performance, outshining urban areas across vehicle segments, while tractor sales held steady amid monsoon effects. Auto dealers anticipate a more intensive demand evaluation in the coming months, from September through November.

India’s auto retail market recorded its biggest-ever August in 2026, with total vehicle sales rising 17.51% year-on-year to 24,23,201 units, while alternative fuels such as CNG, hybrids and electric vehicles collectively overtook petrol in passenger vehicle sales for the first time in the country’s history, according to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).

Alternative fuels accounted for 41.95% of passenger vehicle retail sales in August, compared with 40.85% for petrol, marking the first time the combined share of CNG, hybrid and electric vehicles surpassed petrol.

Overall auto retail sales were, however, down 6.48% from July, when the industry had posted a record high. FADA attributed the month-on-month decline to the seasonal monsoon lull and a shift in the festive calendar, with Ganesh Chaturthi and the spillover of Onam-led buying moving into September.

FADA President Sai Giridhar said, “August’26 delivered the biggest-ever August in Indian Auto Retail, with the industry registering 24,23,201 units, up 17.51% YoY — even as retails eased 6.48% over a record July on the seasonal monsoon lull and a festival calendar that shifted Ganesh Chaturthi and the spillover of Onam-led buying into September."

The shift in passenger vehicle fuel preferences marks a significant change from a little over a year ago, when petrol had a lead of nearly 11 percentage points over the combined share of alternative fuels.

Rural markets outperformed urban markets across all vehicle categories in August. Rural retail sales grew 19.79% year-on-year, compared with 15.17% growth in urban markets.

Passenger vehicle sales in rural markets rose 24.99% year-on-year, more than twice the 10.93% growth recorded in urban markets.

Tractor sales remained an exception to the broader strength in auto retail. The segment was almost flat year-on-year, rising 0.84%, while falling 25.03% from July. The rural-urban deficit in tractors widened to around 13%, indicating continued monsoon-linked pressure on the segment.

FADA said the year-on-year growth in August should also be viewed against a relatively weak base. Buyers had deferred purchases in August 2025 while awaiting the GST 2.0 rate cut, which contributed to the stronger year-on-year comparison this year.

The association also said dealers reported that the festive-season start was below their own expectations. It said the more meaningful test for demand would be showroom conversion from September through November.

Overall, FADA's sentiment remained optimistic despite the month-on-month moderation and the weakness in tractors.
