As part of the ongoing nationwide “Swachhata Hi Seva” (SHS) 2026 campaign, Mumbai Central Division of Western Railway intensified its multi-pronged cleanliness, waste management, and civic awareness initiatives. Over four consecutive days, from 21st to 24th September 2026, the campaign has witnessed widespread participation from railway employees, civic authorities, voluntary organizations and passengers across stations, coaching depots, carsheds, hospitals and residential colonies.

According to a press release issued by Chief Public Relations Officer, Western Railway, Vineet Abhishek, the intensive clean-up drives over this four-day period yielded the collection of more than 10 tonnes of segregated waste across the division, comprising 6,300 kg of wet waste, 3,700 kg of dry waste, 83 kg of special-care waste and 47 kg of sanitary waste. In a major Cleanliness Target Unit (CTU) remediation effort at Coach Care Centre, Surat, around 200 kg of waste was cleared and handed over to Surat Municipal authorities, with the cleared site proposed for garden development. Comprehensive cleanliness drives were also carried out across Carsheds at Mumbai Central and Virar, featuring special coach-cleaning drives covering interiors, toilets, floors, fittings and exterior surfaces.

Public awareness and community outreach remained key focal points under the banner of Jan Bhagidari. A dedicated door-to-door drive covered 158 households on 24th September, while home composting and waste-management awareness initiatives reached 140 participants. The division actively promoted the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle (3R) principle through innovative Waste-to-Art creations crafted from railway scrap, alongside interactive drawing competitions. Additionally, the Swachhata Pledge was administered to around 150 railway officials and other participants, reinforcing the collective commitment towards waste segregation and the elimination of single-use plastics.

The campaign also highlighted the welfare of sanitation workers through health check-up camps for housekeeping staff at Virar and Dadar under the Safai Mitra Suraksha Shivir initiative.
