Synopsis
Maruti Suzuki’s exports of Made-in-India Jimny 5-door, FRONX and e VITARA to Japan have crossed 1 lakh units, highlighting growing demand for Indian-made cars in the competitive Japanese auto market. Japan was Maruti Suzuki’s second-largest export market in FY2026 and retained the position in April-August 2026. India’s automobile exports to Japan have also risen sharply.

Maruti Suzuki's cumulative exports of the Made-in-India Jimny 5-door, FRONX and e VITARA to Japan have crossed 1 lakh units, highlighting Indian automobiles' continued outbound shipment dominance to the far east country that's seen to be a highly competitive auto market with advanced features.
Japan was Maruti Suzuki’s second-biggest export market by volume in FY2026 and it maintained the position in April to August of this fiscal year, the company said in a statement.

Maruti Suzuki began exporting the FRONX to Japan in August 2024, followed by the five-door Jimny in December 2024. In September 2025, the company added its first battery electric vehicle (BEV), the e VITARA, to its Japan export line-up. Both the five-door Jimny and e VITARA are made exclusively in India, strengthening the country’s position as a key manufacturing base for Suzuki.
"The milestone of over 1 lakh exports of Jimny 5-door, FRONX, and e VITARA to Japan is a powerful endorsement of India's manufacturing excellence. This achievement is particularly significant as Japan is one of the world’s most demanding and advanced automobile markets," said Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India.

The export milestone highlights how much the India-Japan partnership has grown. Suzuki’s original plan was to make cars in India, but the relationship has now come full circle, with Indian-made vehicles gaining popularity among Japanese buyers. Japan has now become Maruti Suzuki’s second-largest export market, underlining the growing acceptance of vehicles made in India, Takeuchi said.
Japan has become an important market for cars made in India, highlighting the growing global acceptance of Indian-made vehicles. A June report by Rubix Data Sciences on India-Japan trade said automobiles were the biggest contributor to India’s export growth to Japan. Their share of India’s exports to Japan rose sharply from just 1% in FY21 to 13% in FY26.
To be sure, Japan itself is also a major carmaker and top exporter.
Exports remain a key contributor for Maruti's overall sales and India's largest carmaker had shipped 3.95 lakh vehicles in 2025, up 21% year on year. This was their highest exports in a calendar year.
