A British Bitcoin investor has experienced the kind of financial turnaround that sounds almost impossible: after being unable to access his cryptocurrency for 12 years, he has finally recovered it and the Bitcoin is now worth about £3.3 million ($5 million).

Known only as Chris, the man originally invested around £1,500 in Bitcoin in 2011 after a friend persuaded him that the then-new cryptocurrency could become valuable. What followed was more than a decade of frustration, missed opportunities and watching Bitcoin's price soar while his own holdings remained out of reach.

His Bitcoin was trapped after an exchange collapsed

Chris purchased his Bitcoin through Intersango, an early UK cryptocurrency exchange formerly known as Britcoin. By 2014, the platform had run into trouble. Chris attempted to withdraw his funds, which were worth roughly $5,400 at the time, but discovered that his account had been frozen. His Bitcoin was effectively inaccessible.

Over the following years, Bitcoin went through enormous price increases, dramatic crashes and repeated recoveries. Chris could see the value of the cryptocurrency rising, but he could not access his own coins.

“It was a bit of a shock when it happened. It wasn't really money that I wanted to lose,” Chris told LBC, according to IFLScience.

Watching Bitcoin rise became painful

For years, Chris had little choice but to accept that his investment might be gone. As Bitcoin became increasingly valuable, however, the inaccessible holdings became harder to forget.

“It was a punch in the stomach watching Bitcoin go up and up. After a while, I stopped watching it because I thought: 'there’s no point, it's lost'," he said.

The story could have ended there. Instead, a family suggestion eventually gave him another chance.

His wife encouraged him to try recovering the Bitcoin

Earlier in 2026, Chris's wife encouraged him to contact specialists who work on recovering lost cryptocurrency and the effort ultimately paid off.

According to reports, 61 Bitcoin were recovered after specialists and lawyers worked through historical records and used blockchain tracing to establish a connection between the cryptocurrency and the failed exchange. The recovery was completed in May 2026. After 12 years, Chris finally had access to his Bitcoin again.

The £1,500 investment is now worth millions

The transformation in value is staggering. Chris initially invested around £1,500. His recovered 61 Bitcoin are now worth approximately £3.3 million, or $5 million, according to recent reports.

That means an investment that once seemed relatively modest has become a multimillion-pound fortune, largely because the Bitcoin remained inaccessible during years of extraordinary price growth.

Reports say he intends to use some of the money to buy a larger family home, partly to better accommodate his mother-in-law's disabilities. He plans to keep the remainder invested in Bitcoin.
