The Delhi Police on Friday (September 4, 2026) altered the FIR in the alleged assault on student activist Nishu Aazad’s father, Sanjay Kumar, during a protest at Jantar Mantar, adding provisions for attempt to murder, voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons and provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The move followed hours of protest and talks between Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) representatives, including spokesperson Saurav Das, co-convenor Ashutosh Ranka and Ms. Azad, and senior police officers at the Parliament Street police station while their supporters staged a sit-in outside the police station.

Their representation sought stronger charges and action against Swatantra Bhardwaj after a video featuring him surfaced online, in which he purportedly spoke about the assault and claimed he “had not been jailed” due to “political connections”.

The CJP representatives said the police had assured them of arresting the accused within 72 hours. “The police have agreed to our demand. Sections 307 (Section 109 of BNS), 326 (Section 118(2) in BNS), and the SC/ST Act will be added to the FIR. The accused will also be arrested within 72 hours, they have assured. They are on it,” they said after the talks.

They also sought verification of Mr. Bhardwaj’s claim that Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra had “called the police to ensure that he was not arrested”.

Mr. Das alleged that the police had earlier refused to add stronger provisions despite the severity of the injury. Describing the wound, he said, “Sanjayji’s skull was cracked open. The wound dimensions were of such great size that it obviously warranted an attempt-to-murder charge in the FIR.”

He also alleged that other persons accompanying Mr. Bhardwaj during the incident had not been identified and claimed that some had subsequently posted videos threatening Ms. Aazad.

Ms. Aazad said the incident and subsequent online abuse had severely affected her. “People have been sending me rape threats, abusing me, making and sharing very disgusting stickers of me. I have lodged a complaint against such individuals too and an FIR has been registered against them as well. I was even ashamed of stepping out of my house. After this incident, I couldn’t go to school for 2-4 weeks,” she said.

“Until now, the police were not responding, but now they’re responding, and I hope they continue to respond and I won’t have to go through this anymore,” she added.

The police, however, disputed the CJP’s account of the injury and denied allegations of political interference in the case.

New Delhi DCP Sachin Sharma had said that Mr. Sanjay had sustained a head injury from a kada (metal bracelet) worn by the accused during a scuffle.

According to the police, Mr. Sanjay was medically examined at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, and the injuries were opined to be simple in nature. The police said the injury was caused by a kada and not a weapon, and that the claim of a crack in the skull was not supported by the medical examination report.

Friday’s protest took place amid heavy police deployment outside the station. Nagina MP Chandrashekhar Azad and Purnia MP Pappu Yadav also joined the CJP representatives during the talks.

The dispute stems from the CJP’s prolonged protest at Jantar Mantar over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations and its July 20 march towards Parliament, when thousands of protesters gathered in Delhi on the opening day of the Monsoon Session.
