Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi landed in New York for the UN General Assembly on Monday – his first trip to the US since conflict began.

Iran's foreign minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in New York on Monday, September 21, to attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly. This marks his first trip to the US since the beginning of the US-Iran conflict.

Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei posted on X, "Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, arrived in New York, the headquarters of the United Nations, this afternoon Monday at the head of a diplomatic delegation to take part in the discussions of the United Nations General Assembly annual summit.”

Baghaei further outlined the key objectives of Araghchi’s visit to New York. Besides attending various sessions of the UN General Assembly and presenting Iran’s positions, the Iranian foreign minister is expected to also hold meetings and consultations with several foreign ministers and officials participating in the summit.

According to AFP, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi spoke by phone with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres after arriving in New York on Monday, with the two discussing the agenda of the UN General Assembly, Iranian state television reported.

Araghchi stated that this year’s gathering would provide a platform to highlight the suffering of the Iranian people and those martyred in the conflict, including victims at a school in Minab and the country’s martyred Leader Khamenei, as per IRNA.

As quoted by ANI, speaking to reporters Araghchi said, “This trip is taking place after the inhumane war that has been waged against us by the United States and the Zionist regime, and the subsequent developments, and in truth, the situation that continues to exist as a war situation. And in the first place, it is natural that our most important goal is to be present in a large international forum, which is the United Nations, to defend the rights of the people of Iran, the rights of the people of Iran, and the interests of the people of Iran.”

Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian is also travelling to New York on Tuesday for the General Assembly. According to Mehr news agency, he will address the UN General Assembly on Wednesday.
