A massive security blanket involving more than 24,000 police personnel will be deployed across Mumbai to ensure peaceful and smooth Ganesh idol immersion processions on Friday (September 25, 2026), officials said. Idols of Lord Ganesh will be immersed on Anant Chaturdashi on September 25 after processions, marking the culmination of the festival, which began on September 14.

Security arrangements

To ensure the safety of lakhs of devotees expected to participate in the final immersion processions, the Mumbai Police and the Traffic Department will deploy six Joint Commissioners of Police, nine Additional Commissioners of Police, 38 DCPs, 66 ACPs, 3,213 police officers, 18,940 police personnel and 1,050 police trainees, an official statement on Wednesday (September 23, 2026) said.

Specialised units, including the Rapid Action Force (RAF), State Reserve Police Force (SRPF), Force One, Quick Response Teams (QRT), Law & Order platoons, Riot Control Squads, Delta and Combat units, Anti-Drone squads and Home Guards, will also be deployed at key and sensitive locations across the metropolis.

The Mumbai Police have appealed to citizens to exercise restraint in crowded places and cooperate with the authorities. Devotees have been urged to alert the police if they spot any unattended or unidentified objects and contact 100, 112 or 103 in case of an emergency.

The security arrangements have been drawn up under the guidance of the Commissioner of Police and the supervision of the Joint Commissioner of Police (Law & Order), according to the official statement.

Traffic restrictions in Mumbai

Traffic management plans have also been formulated under the supervision of the Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic).

During Ganesh idol immersion days, citizens and devotees tend to park their vehicles near immersion ghat entrances, on service roads and on the northbound and southbound lanes of the main JVLR. Such parking could cause severe traffic congestion along the stretch, besides potentially leading to law and order issues and obstructing emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire tenders.

In the Sakinaka Traffic Division, the Mumbai Traffic Police have imposed no-parking restrictions, as required during Ganesh idol immersion days, for all types of vehicles on the northbound and southbound lanes between the L&T Flyover and IIT Market Gate.

In the Ghatkopar Traffic Division, the movement of heavy vehicles on both carriageways of JVLR will be restricted, as required, to ensure smooth traffic flow and prevent inconvenience to other motorists.

Heavy vehicles approaching JVLR from the Eastern Express Highway will have to continue along the Eastern Express Highway. Similarly, heavy vehicles approaching JVLR from the Western Express Highway will have to continue along the Western Express Highway.

Road closures

With a large number of citizens and devotees expected in the Lalbaug and Kalachowki areas during Ganeshotsav till September 25, 2026, several traffic restrictions have been imposed to prevent congestion. The following roads will remain closed for 24 hours, as required, from September 14 to September 25:

1. Dr. B.A. Road (southbound): Vehicular traffic will not be allowed from Comrade Krishna Desai Chowk (Bharat Mata Junction) to Hansraj Rathod Chowk (Bawla Compound Junction).

Alternative routes: Vehicles travelling southbound on Dr. B.A. Road towards CSMT can use the Lalbaug flyover.Alternatively, vehicles can take a right turn at Comrade Krishna Desai Chowk (Bharat Mata Junction) – Currey Road Bridge – Shingate Master Chowk – left turn – N.M. Joshi Road – Comrade Ganacharya Chowk (Chinchpokali Junction) – Abdul Hamid Ansari Chowk (Khada Parsee) – South Mumbai.

Vehicles travelling southbound on Dr. B.A. Road towards CSMT can also take a left turn at Comrade Krishna Desai Chowk (Bharat Mata Junction) – Jijibhai Lane – Sadashiv Gopal Naik Chowk – Shree Sai Baba Marg – Sai Baba T Junction – left turn – G.D. Ambekar Slip Road – right turn at Veterinary College Gate – G.D. Ambekar Road – Ambewadi Naka – Shravan Yashwant Chowk – Barrister Nath Pai Road – P.D. Mello Road – South Mumbai.

2. Mahadeo Palav Marg (Currey Road):The stretch from Shingate Master Chowk to Comrade Krishna Desai Chowk (Bharat Mata Junction) will remain closed.

Alternative route: Shingate Master Chowk – N.M. Joshi Marg – Chinchpokali Junction – left turn – Saint Jagnade Maharaj Chowk (Gas Company Junction) – Comrade Krishna Desai Chowk (Bharat Mata Junction) – desired destination.

3. Vehicles travelling from Sane Guruji Marg towards Dr. B.A. Road (southbound) will not be allowed to take a right turn at Saint Jagnade Maharaj Chowk (Gas Company Junction).

4. Vehicular traffic will not be allowed on Dattaram Lad Road from Udipi Hotel to Shantaram Pujare Chowk (Sardar Hotel).

5. Vehicular traffic will not be allowed on Ganesh Nagar Lane (Chivda Galli) from its junction with Dr. B.A. Road to Madhav Prabhu Chowk (Puja Hotel Junction).

6. Vehicular traffic will not be allowed on Dinshaw Petit Lane from its junction with Dr. B.A. Road to its junction with Ganesh Nagar Lane.

7. Vehicular traffic will not be allowed on Dr. S.S. Rao Road from Sadashiv Gopal Naik Chowk to Lalbaug Police Chowki.

8. Emergency vehicles and vehicles belonging to residents will be allowed, after verification, on Ganesh Nagar Lane, Dinshaw Petit Lane and Dr. S.S. Rao Road. However, no vehicles will be allowed on Dattaram Lad Marg.

No-parking restrictions

Parking will not be allowed on the following roads for 24 hours from September 14 to September 25, 2026:

1. Dr. B.A. Road, southbound, from Comrade Krishna Desai Chowk (Bharat Mata Junction) to Hansraj Rathod Chowk (Bawla Compound Junction)

Curbs on DJs, lasers and firecrackers

Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde on Wednesday (September 23, 2026) said the civic administration will follow the Bombay High Court’s directives on the use of DJs and lasers and the bursting of firecrackers during Ganesh idol immersion processions in the metropolis.

Festivals can be celebrated without causing noise and air pollution, the High Court said on Tuesday (September 22, 2026), while ordering a complete ban on the bursting of firecrackers on public roads. It also said the use of loudspeakers, DJs and laser beams during religious processions was “completely unwarranted”.

The Mayor also said the civic body has made free facilities available for the immersion of Lord Ganesh idols at 387 artificial lakes and other natural water bodies across Mumbai. She urged citizens not to pay anyone for the immersion of Ganesh idols at these locations.
