  Left parties demand CEC Kumar's removal; Brittas writes to Prez seeking 'urgent intervention'

  Left parties on Wednesday (September 23, 2026) demanded removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and an immediate halt to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise with CPI(M) MP John Brittas writing to President Droupadi Murmu seeking her “urgent intervention.”

  In a statement issued here, the Politburo of the CPI(M) said the revelations in the report raise serious questions not just about the process, but more importantly about the integrity of the EC itself.

  “The disclosures have only strengthened suspicions and concerns that the CPI(M), other opposition parties and civil society organisations have all along raised since the SIR process was initiated,” it said.

  Election commissioners sharing differing views reflection of pure democracy: BJP

  The BJP on Wednesday (September 23, 2026) said the reports about three election commissioners sharing differing views during official deliberations show that the Election Commission is functioning in a democratic manner.

  The ruling party also said the reports demolish the opposition’s allegation that the poll panel is “dictatorial”.

  Addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters, party spokesperson Sambit Patra said, “The media reports saying that the election commissioners shared differing views in official deliberations is a reflection of pure democracy.”

  Tharoor says EC statement does not answer several questions, calls for transparency

  Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said the Election Commission’s statement, after it emerged that the two election commissioners repeatedly dissented over the SIR of voter lists, does not appear to answer several of the specific questions raised.

  Mr. Tharoor said that, given the importance of electoral institutions, the questions raised are worth being placed on public record and answered transparently.

  Opposition parties on Wednesday (September 23, 2026) sought the removal of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar after an expose claimed that two of the three Election Commissioners, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, had formally recorded objections at least 14 times over the last 10 months. The two ECs said major decisions were being made in the name of the full Election Commission without their knowledge, several of which they called “unauthorised and illegal”.
