The Karnataka State Dalit Sangharsh Samiti (DSS) strongly condemned Pratap Simha, former MP, for his reported remarks against the Dalit community, the DSS, and the wearing of blue scarves, describing them as “highly objectionable and derogatory”.

Speaking at a press conference in Kalaburagi city on Tuesday, DSS State convener D.G. Sagar said Mr. Simha’s statements, made during a recent Ganesha idol immersion procession at T. Narsipur, reflected a “deep disregard” for the history of Karnataka’s Dalit movement and the constitutional values of equality and social justice.

Recalling the legacy of the DSS, Dr. Sagar highlighted that the organisation emerged in the 1970s as a vital social movement to give a voice to marginalised communities. He noted its extensive struggles against caste discrimination, untouchability, exploitation of women, and religious superstition across the State.

“It is deeply condemnable for a former Member of Parliament to make disparaging remarks about a movement that has fought for the dignity and rights of oppressed communities,” Dr. Sagar said, warning that such statements would provoke communal tensions.

Dr. Sagar demanded that Mr. Simha tender an unconditional apology to the Dalit community and withdraw his remarks. Dr. Sagar also launched a sharp attack on the ideological positions of the RSS and the BJP, alleging that their politics contributes to social divisions.

Samiti opposes samavesha

Replying to a question, Dr. Sagar clarified that the DSS would oppose the proposed Basavadi Sharanara Hindu Samavesha scheduled to be held in Kalaburagi city on September 27.

He urged the district administration and police authorities to withhold permission for Adrushya Kadasiddeshwara Swami of Kaneri Mutt to address the rally, alleging that the seer’s statements could disturb communal harmony in the region.
