The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Tuesday (September 15, 2026) filed a breach of privilege complaint with Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar seeking action against Minister for Energy Resources and Law C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar for allegedly providing false information in the recently-concluded Budget session at the Assembly about former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.

The complaint was submitted by DMK MLAs M.R.K. Panneerselvam, Vasantham K. Karthikeyan, E. Raja and Kadhar Batcha alias Muthuramalingam. Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat in Chennai after filing the complaint, DMK Whip E.V. Velu and Mr. Panneerselvam said Mr. Kumar, violating the rules and conventions of the House, spoke against Karunanidhi in the Assembly by negatively portraying him through references to the Sarkaria Commission report.

They said the party had already objected to Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s speech on this issue. Despite that, Mr. Kumar “had been providing false information.” They also alleged Mr. Kumar negatively portrayed Vaithilingam, A.L. Srinivasan and H.V. Rao, who were secretaries to Mr. Karunanidhi and were not members of the House. According to them, levelling allegations against persons who were not present in the House was against the rules and conventions of the Assembly.

They argued that even if there is a need to speak about a member who is present in the House, as per the Assembly rules, the details in that regard should be informed in advance to the Speaker and the member concerned. However, they alleged remarks had been made in violation of the rules without providing any prior intimation. The DMK legislators urged that the matter be referred to the Privileges Committee.
