Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Tuesday (September 22, 2026) launched the expansion of the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme to students of Classes VI to VIII in government and government-aided schools, at a function held at Gandhi Gramam Corporation School in Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai.

The Chief Minister sat with students and had breakfast with them before inspecting the school’s classrooms.

The expansion will benefit around 15.3 lakh students studying in Classes VI to VIII across 15,454 government and government-aided schools in the State. An additional allocation of ₹217.63 crore has been made for the scheme in the current financial year.

Under the expanded scheme, breakfast will be prepared and served through centralised kitchens in 447 government and government-aided schools within the Greater Chennai Corporation. In 2,150 government and government-aided schools spread across other municipal corporations, municipalities and adjoining town panchayat areas, breakfast will similarly be prepared and served through centralised kitchens, run by the Directorate of Municipal Administration.

In the remaining 12,857 government and government-aided schools in rural areas and adjoining town panchayat areas, breakfast will be prepared and served by members of self-help groups affiliated with the Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women.
