Posts linked to the viral trend have reportedly named real students, schools and communities in Kentucky and Tennessee, sometimes alongside threatening messages such as “you’re next.” The unsettling trend has prompted school districts and law enforcement agencies to investigate.

An unsettling “Cat in the Hat” trend spreading across TikTok, Snapchat and other social media platforms is drawing attention from school officials and law enforcement in Kentucky and Tennessee. The viral posts appear to use AI-generated images and videos showing a sinister version of the familiar Dr. Seuss character. What began as creepy internet content has become more serious after some posts started identifying real schools, communities and students alongside threatening messages.

Officials in both states have made an appeal to students, parents and school employees to report suspicious posts rather than engage with or share them.

What is the ‘Cat in the Hat’ trend?

The online trend features an eerie-looking, AI-generated version of the Cat in the Hat appearing outside homes, schools and other locations. Some posts reportedly include lists of first names, places and communities. Others carry threatening captions, including phrases such as “you’re next” and “don’t leave your window open.”

The use of real locations and names has raised concerns because the content can appear personal even when there is no confirmed physical threat behind it.

Kentucky schools respond as posts go viral

The trend has caused disruptions across several Kentucky school districts. At Assumption High School in Louisville, classes were moved online and after-school activities were canceled Monday following concerns about the posts. School officials told parents that some accounts had identified real schools and students, meaning each report had to be taken seriously.

Oldham County officials also reported unsettling Snapchat messages being sent to students. The district said there was no verifiable danger but emphasized that officials were “not treating this lightly.”

In Allen County, the situation has already resulted in law enforcement action, with a juvenile facing charges connected to the posts. Louisville Metro Police said there was no credible threat at the time, while the city's Homeland Security Unit continued reviewing the information.

‘It is uneasy,’ school safety official says

The viral Cat in the Hat AI trend has also unsettled families in Bullitt County. Sarah Smith, the Bullitt County Schools Public Safety Director, described the situation as disturbing for the wider community.

“It is uneasy,” Sarah Smith told news outlet WDRB, the Bullitt County Schools Public Safety Director. “It's pretty unnerving for our families, our community and our state.”

Smith said a student in the county came across one of the posts and reported it to school administrators — the response officials want to see when students encounter threatening or disturbing material online.

She added that the content is affecting schools even when investigators cannot identify a direct threat. “There isn't a direct threat that's really being made, but more of an ominous, scary, eerie feeling,” Smith said.

Tennessee officials are also tracking the trend

The concern is not limited to Kentucky. Tennessee's Office of Homeland Security Threat Assessment Center is tracking similar Cat in the Hat-themed online content targeting schools and students.

Officials say some posts have gone beyond fictional or disturbing imagery by naming specific schools and students and using language suggesting the character is “coming for” them.

With the trend spreading online, authorities are asking anyone who encounters potentially threatening content to report it to local law enforcement or the appropriate school and state authorities.

For schools, the challenge is separating an unsettling viral internet trend from a genuine threat while ensuring that no potentially serious warning is ignored.

As Smith put it: “This disrupts the educational process.”
