Adani Electricity Mumbai Ltd conducted an electrical safety awareness drive across its licence area on September 4 ahead of Janmashtami and Dahi Handi celebrations, urging organisers to follow safety measures and avoid unauthorised power connections.

Company teams met Dahi Handi organisers and their electrical contractors to explain safe practices at pandals and shared a list of dos and don'ts to prevent electrical accidents during the festivities.

Organisers were advised to maintain a safe distance from overhead power lines while positioning Handis, stages and pyramid formation areas. They were also asked to obtain metered temporary connections for stage lighting, sound systems and decorations and ensure that all electrical work is carried out by licensed contractors.

Adani Electricity advised organisers to use ISI-marked cables of adequate rating with MCB and RCCB protection and ensure proper earthing of metal frames, trusses, scaffolding and poles. Meter boxes and distribution boards should be locked, covered, raised above ground and kept out of public reach, it said.

The company warned organisers against tying Handi ropes, banners or other structures to electric poles, stay wires or streetlight poles. Stages, mandaps and hoardings should also not be erected below or close to overhead power lines.

Organisers were asked not to tap power directly from street lines or use unauthorised connections. Water hoses and sprays should be kept away from electrical points, distribution boards, poles and feeder pillars. The company also cautioned against loose or taped joints, overloading power points, blocking access to feeder pillars and substations, and climbing electric poles or transformer structures.

Erection, wiring and other electrical arrangements at venues will remain the responsibility of the organising pandal and its licensed contractor, the company said.

“Dahi Handi is an integral part of Mumbai's festive spirit, and our objective is to ensure that the celebrations are enjoyed safely and responsibly. Our teams have prepared well in advance by inspecting key locations, deploying personnel, and working closely with organisers and authorities,” an Adani Electricity spokesperson said.

The spokesperson urged people to keep safety as the highest priority during celebrations and said pandals and customers could contact the company's 24×7 toll-free helpline, 19122, in case of any emergency related to electricity supply.
