Why was this 17th-century Polish woman buried with a padlock on her toe and an iron sickle across her neck? 300 years later, archaeologists found the answer
    Synopsis

More than 300 years after her death, archaeologists uncovered the unusual grave of a young 17th-century Polish woman buried with a padlock on her toe and an iron sickle across her neck. New research suggests that the people who buried the young woman took precautionary measures to stop her from coming back to life and exacting revenge on them.

Researchers believe the lock may have symbolically bound Zosia to the grave, while the sickle provided an additional physical and supernatural barrier.

More than 300 years after a young woman was buried in what is now Pień, Poland, archaeologists have uncovered new clues about why her community took extraordinary measures to keep her in the grave.

When researchers opened the burial in 2022, they found an unsettling arrangement. An iron sickle had been placed across the woman’s neck, with its sharp blade facing toward her. An iron triangular padlock was attached to her big toe.

The woman, now known as “Zosia,” had apparently been buried with not one but several safeguards intended to prevent her from returning from the dead.

A new study led by archaeologist Dariusz Poliński of Nicolaus Copernicus University offers a closer look at what those unusual objects may have meant—and why the people around Zosia may have feared her even after her death.

Why was a sickle placed across her throat?

The sickle is perhaps the most striking feature of Zosia’s burial.

According to researchers, it was deliberately positioned so that the blade would have prevented her from rising from the grave. The arrangement was part of a broader set of practices used by communities who believed certain dead people could return and bring misfortune to the living.

The padlock on her toe appears to have served a similar purpose.

Researchers believe the lock may have symbolically bound Zosia to the grave, while the sickle provided an additional physical and supernatural barrier.

“It was unusual that there were two precautions, two methods of showing that this skeleton should be kept in the graveso the fear of the body coming back to life was greater,” Poliński tells CNN’s Katie Hunt.

The discovery suggests that whoever buried Zosia was not simply following an ordinary funerary custom. Her burial appears to have been intentionally different.

Zosia may have been blamed for misfortune

Although modern reports have frequently described Zosia as a “vampire,” archaeologists say the label can be misleading.

The study argues that, in the context of 17th-century Poland, such individuals were more broadly associated with the idea of a dangerous or demonic being.

People who stood outside the boundaries of their communities—including outsiders, religious heretics and orphans—could sometimes be viewed with suspicion. Those who died in tragic or unusual circumstances could also face unusual treatment after death.

Researchers believe Zosia may have been regarded as a threat and blamed for disasters such as illness or famine, although exactly what caused the community to fear her remains unknown.

A mysterious object may have been placed in her mouth

The unusual burial contains another intriguing clue.

Archaeologists discovered traces of copper, manganese and gold on Zosia’s palate. These traces could indicate that another object had been placed in or near her mouth or nose after death.

The object itself has not been identified, but researchers believe it could have represented yet another attempt to prevent the young woman from returning.

That would mean Zosia’s grave contained several separate protective measures rather than a single ritual.

    Was Zosia actually a noblewoman?

Perhaps the biggest mystery is why someone who appears to have been socially prominent received such an unusual burial.

Researchers found traces of silk on Zosia’s skull, apparently belonging to an expensive cap decoration woven with gold threads. Such accessories were rare, leading the team to suggest that she may have been an elite member of society—possibly even a noblewoman.

She was probably in her late teens when she died.

“One hypothesis is that the local population feared her revenge,” Poliński said in a 2024 statement. “It is very possible that a tragedy occurred in the woman’s life, and she was harmed. On the other hand, her appearance or behavior might have made the local people fear her.”

Her cause of death is still unknown, as is whether she was born in the area or arrived there as a teenager.

Pień was filled with unusual burials

Zosia’s grave was not an isolated discovery.

Archaeologists investigating the Pień cemetery have found a number of other unusual burials, including a child placed facedown with a padlock beneath their foot. Other skeletons were apparently weighed down with stones.

More than a dozen of the 101 burials examined so far have been classified as “extraordinary.”

The researchers suspect the cemetery may have been located on unconsecrated ground, potentially serving as a burial place for people considered poor, disgraced or otherwise outside the mainstream community.

Scientists have now given Zosia a face

In 2024, sculptor and artist Oscar D. Nilsson created a 3D facial reconstruction of Zosia using detailed measurements of her skull along with clues about her age, health and physical characteristics.

The reconstruction depicts a young woman with blue eyes, light brown hair and a broad nose.

“It’s really ironic, in a way,” Nilsson told Reuters in 2024. “These people burying her, they did everything they could in order to prevent her from coming back from the dead. … We have done everything we can in order to bring her back to life.”

For centuries, Zosia's identity and fate were hidden beneath the soil. Now, the strange sickle, padlock and other clues are helping archaeologists reconstruct not only how she was buried, but also how deeply her community may have feared her.
