A Delhi court on Tuesday granted interim bail to Sharjeel Imam, an accused in the case concerning the alleged larger conspiracy behind the 2020 northeast Delhi riots.

Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai of the Karkardooma Courts granted Mr. Imam temporary release from October 4 to October 10 to enable him to attend his cousin’s wedding. The Delhi High Court is scheduled to hear his regular bail plea on September 30.

This is not the first time Mr. Imam has received interim relief. He was earlier granted a 10-day interim bail from March 20 to March 30 to attend his brother’s wedding.

Mr. Imam and several other student activists, including Umar Khalid, participated in protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in 2019-2020. Booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), they have been accused by the Delhi Police of being involved in an alleged larger conspiracy linked to the communal violence that erupted in northeast Delhi in the last week of February 2020.

The other accused include Tahir Hussain, Khalid Saifi, Isharat Jahan, Meeran Haider, Gulfisha Fatima, Shifa-Ur-Rehman, Asif Iqbal Tanha, Shadab Ahmed, Tasleem Ahmed, Saleem Malik, Mohd. Saleem Khan, Athar Khan, Safoora Zargar, Faizan Khan, Devangana Kalita and Natasha Narwal.

Many of the accused, including Mr. Tanha, Ms. Zargar, Ms. Kalita and Ms. Narwal, have been granted bail by different courts.

On July 4, a Delhi court rejected the bail pleas of Mr. Khalid and Mr. Imam. The two, who have been in jail for around six years, had argued that keeping them in custody without the commencement of trial amounted to a violation of their fundamental right to liberty.
