New York City Zohran Mamdani took his first vacation after assuming charge, going away for a week to Coxsackie, with wife Rama Duwaji.
“It was very restorative,” Mamdani said about his getaway after he returned to his duties as Mayor.
What to know about Coxsackie?
Coxsackie is located in Greene County, New York on the west bank of the Hudson River.
The name of the place translates to ‘place of owls’ and WebMD notes Coxsackie is the original location where the Coxsackievirus—a group of enteroviruses that can cause hand, foot, and mouth disease—was first isolated in 1948.

- Mamdani shared that he had had a ‘lovely time upstate’, as per AmNY. He reportedly said he bounced around and missed the city.
- Mamdani and his wife, Rama, bought two roast chickens and a hefty amount of vegetables at a local Tops grocery store in West Coxsackie last Sunday, New York Times reported.
- Mamdani's wife, Rama, was seen wearing all black at the grocery store as the Mayor and his partner were accompanied by a single bodyguard.
- Mamdani and his wife dined at Casa Susanna in Leeds where they had duck and chochoyotes, or masa dumplings, as per New York Times. The couple also went to dine in an Uzbekistani restaurant – Alons – in the area.
- Mamdani added that he had been in regular contact with his team while away on the vacation.
In comparison, Mamdani's predecessors, Michael R. Bloomberg was known for his regular visits to his waterfront vacation home in Bermuda. Eric Adams was known for jet-setting, and ultimately faced a federal indictment on charges which involved , among other things, free flights from Turkish Airlines.
What did Zohran Mamdani do upon return from Coxsackie?
Mamdani is back on the job after the Coxsackie trip. He has launched the Parks Department’s new “Renew Crew." This is a team of 24, including painters, electricians, plumbers and other trade specialists, who are focused on making faster repairs at playgrounds, recreation centers and sports courts across the five boroughs.
The city is investing $2.3 million in the plan. Mamdani also posted about it on X.
“Broken equipment and broken promises. New Yorkers deserve better from their government. Meet Renew Crew: New York City's first-ever team dedicated to fixing playgrounds, sports courts, and rec centers in every borough. See something broken at your park? Report it to 311. Renew Crew will be on the way,” he wrote.
The announcement from Mamdani on Monday also featured 8-year-old Maxime, who had recorded a video in April asking the mayor to help open the playground at Brooklyn’s McKinley Park.
