Watch: Yashasvi Jaiswal headbutts Asitha Fernando after falling for 45 in Colombo Test

By Sohail Khan 23 August 2026, 1:02 pm

Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was involved in a heated confrontation with Sri Lanka pacer Asitha Fernando after being dismissed for 45 during the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club ground in Colombo on Sunday.

The incident occurred moments after Fernando ended Jaiswal’s promising stay at the crease. The Indian opener had struck three boundaries in the over before Fernando produced a delivery that beat his defence and clattered into his stumps, sending him back to the pavilion.

As Jaiswal began walking back, he turned around and approached Fernando. The two exchanged words before moving extremely close to each other, and then Jaiswal headbutted the Sri Lankan pacer. Players from both sides quickly intervened to prevent the confrontation from escalating, after which Jaiswal continued towards the dressing room.

Jaiswal scored 45 off 53 balls, hitting nine boundaries in his innings. India had opted to bat first, with the left-hander providing his side with early momentum before Fernando brought his innings to an end.

The opener had also been involved in verbal banter during the first Test, when he traded words with Sri Lankan wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella during the hosts’ second innings.

The latest incident also comes after another fiery episode involving an Indian opening batter against Sri Lanka. Teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was involved in a heated exchange with Sri Lankan players while representing India A in a tri-series in June.

With India A needing eight runs from the final ball of the Super Over, Sri Lankan pacer Kugathas Mathulan bowled a pinpoint yorker that Sooryavanshi failed to connect with. Sri Lanka celebrated wildly, while the teenager appeared frustrated and exchanged words with the opposition.

Sooryavanshi then moved towards Mathulan before teammate Vishen Halambage intervened. He was subsequently seen pushing a fielder, while Suryansh Shedge attempted to pull him away. Dickwella eventually stepped in to defuse the situation as Sooryavanshi walked back to the pavilion visibly angry after India A failed to chase down the target.
