Rajamahendravaram Rural MLA Gorantla Butchaiah Chowdary on Friday said the State government had assured ₹20 crore for buildings and infrastructure facilities at the Sree Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University campus at Bommuru in East Godavari district.

Mr. Butchaiah Chowdary and Rajamahendravaram MP D. Purandeswari laid the foundation stone for a road network on the university campus. The Rajamahendravaram Urban Development Authority (RUDA) has sanctioned ₹75 lakh for the road works.

Addressing students and members of the teaching fraternity, Mr. Butchaiah Chowdary said the need to strengthen the university and improve facilities on the Bommuru campus had been raised in the Assembly. He said the government had assured ₹20 crore for its development. Efforts were also being made to mobilise funds from public sector units operating in the Godavari region, he said.

Of the 45 acres allotted to the Bommuru campus in 1985, about 15 acres had subsequently been diverted for various government purposes. The remaining 30 acres would be developed without any further allotment for government purposes, Mr. Butchaiah Chowdary said.

Ms. Purandeswari recalled that her father, former Chief Minister N.T. Rama Rao, had established the Telugu University in December 1985, with its headquarters in Hyderabad and campuses in Rajamahendravaram and Srisailam. The Bommuru campus would be developed with the required infrastructure, she said.

Sree Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University Vice-Chancellor D. Muniratnam Naidu spoke about the academic activities being undertaken at the campus.

RUDA Chairman B. Venkata Ramana Chowdary and BJP East Godavari district president Pikki Narendra were present.
