Rahul Gandhi ends six-hour dharna after FIR registered over youth's pellet injuries
Synopsis
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi ended his over-six-hour dharna at Delhi’s Parliament Street police station on Friday after an FIR was registered over pellet injuries suffered by youth Sahil Lochab during the July 20 protest. Gandhi had demanded the case after Lochab sustained injuries to his eyes and abdomen and underwent surgery.
PTICongress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday ended his over six-hour dharna at the Parliament Street police station after Delhi Police registered an FIR over pellet injuries suffered by a youth during the July 20 protest.
Gandhi had been sitting at the police station demanding that a case be registered in connection with injuries suffered by Sahil Lochab, who sustained pellet wounds to his eyes and abdomen during the protest.
The Congress leader, accompanied by Lochab, had first approached the Mandir Marg police station seeking registration of an FIR. After his demand was not accepted, Gandhi moved to the Parliament Street police station, where he met DCP Sachin Sharma before beginning his sit-in.
The protest continued for more than six hours, with security heightened around the police station, which also houses the New Delhi DCP's office.
RAF deployed around police station
Rapid Action Force personnel and additional police were deployed in and around the Parliament Street police station as Gandhi continued his dharna, police sources known to news agency PTI said.
A large contingent of police and RAF personnel was positioned around the premises in view of the Congress leader's sit-in, with additional personnel brought in to manage the situation.
The security deployment came amid the gathering of Congress workers and supporters around the police station.
Youth injured during July 20 protest
Lochab suffered pellet injuries to his eyes and abdomen during the July 20 protest and subsequently underwent surgery at the AIIMS Trauma Centre.
Gandhi had sought an FIR into the circumstances surrounding the injuries, making the registration of the case the central demand of his protest.
The July 20 protest had drawn a significant police presence, and the Congress leader's decision to stage a dharna at the police station put renewed focus on the alleged use of pellets during the demonstration.
