People injured after being caught off-guard
In the first earthquake, that rattled Tokyo, most of the injured were hurt when they fell down or hit themselves against furniture or doors as they were caught off guard by the quake while sleeping and got out of bed in a panic, the Associated Press reported, quoting officials.
The quake reportedly caused delays to express trains serving Tokyo and Narita Airport and other local trains serving northeastern regions, but Shinkansen bullet trains were running normally
The government set up a task force to assess the extent of possible damage, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi was quoted as saying.
Japan's weather agency issued a warning about similar earthquakes in the coming days after the tremors in Tokyo which had originated in the southern part of Ibaraki Prefecture at a depth of 68 kilometers.
The quake was reportedly felt across a wide swath of the country, including northeastern and central Japan.
In the morning quake, transportation was impacted following the event. The start of some train services was delayed, while some trains ran at reduced speeds, according to JR East and other operators, as cited by Kyodo News.
