Ganga Aarti on Thames! London to witness Varanasi, Haridwar-style river ceremony in September

London’s Thames will host a Ganga Aarti on September 13, 2026, at the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich. Organised by Chinmaya Mission UK with Totally Thames, the free event will feature Indian food, music, dance and cultural activities before the main ceremony at 7:15 PM.

London is set to witness a familiar Indian riverside tradition in an unusual setting this September, with Ganga Aarti scheduled to take place on the banks of the River Thames. The ceremony will be held on September 13, 2026, at the historic Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich as part of the month-long Totally Thames 2026 programme.



The event is being presented by Chinmaya Mission UK in collaboration with Totally Thames. For Indians visiting London, the ceremony will offer a chance to see a ritual commonly associated with Varanasi, Haridwar and Rishikesh against the historic setting of Greenwich.

From the Ganga to the Thames

The event will take place from 4 PM to 8 PM, with the main Ganga Aarti scheduled for 7:15 PM, around sunset. The programme will include Indian food, stalls, live music, dance and family-friendly activities before the main ceremony begins on the Royal Steps beside the Thames.

How different will it feel from Varanasi?

Anyone who has watched the evening Ganga Aarti in Varanasi or Rishikesh is likely to notice the difference immediately.



In Varanasi, the aarti is part of the daily life of the ancient river city. The ceremony at Dashashwamedh Ghat features priests, conch shells, bells, chanting and large brass lamps, with the evening ritual lasting around 45 minutes.



Similar riverside ceremonies take place in Rishikesh and Haridwar, where the relationship between the river, religious tradition and the surrounding ghats shapes the experience.

The Greenwich event will recreate elements of that riverside tradition, but its surroundings will be very different. Instead of the historic ghats of Varanasi, visitors will see the Thames, the Old Royal Naval College and the wider London skyline.



The event therefore offers more than a recreation of an Indian religious ceremony. It creates a cultural connection between two rivers and two very different riverfront settings.

A new experience for London travellers

The Ganga Aarti will also form part of a wider programme along the Thames. Totally Thames 2026 will run throughout September, featuring art, heritage, performances and community events at different locations along the river.



Visitors travelling to Greenwich for the ceremony can make a wider day or evening out of the trip. The area offers access to the Old Royal Naval College, historic attractions and the Thames waterfront before the aarti begins.



For Indian travellers in London, the September 13 event could provide a distinctly familiar experience far from the Indian cities where the tradition is usually seen. For others, it will be an opportunity to encounter an Indian river ritual beside one of Britain's best-known waterways.



The setting may be London, but for a few hours in September, the Thames will become the backdrop for a ceremony traditionally associated with the Ganga.
