Border talks with China

A clearly demarcated and mutually recognised India-China boundary is indispensable for transforming a contested frontier into a zone of stability and predictability. Yet, cartographic negotiations must be accompanied by sustained diplomatic engagement, military confidence-building measures and strict adherence to previously negotiated agreements. India must remain vigilant against unilateral alterations of the status quo while demonstrating strategic patience and diplomatic dexterity. Beijing, too, must recognise that durable peace cannot be predicated on ambiguity or coercive posturing.

Rainwater management

India needs a new approach to managing rainwater — one that does not merely drain water, but captures, conserves and puts it to productive use. The installation of scientifically designed honeycomb sponge manholes along roads across the country could become an important component of such a national water-management strategy. Honeycomb sponge manholes can be designed to receive and temporarily store rainwater, allowing it to percolate into the ground in a controlled manner and contribute to groundwater recharge. This system could function as a decentralised rainwater-harvesting network beneath our streets. India should consider pilot projects in cities that regularly experience severe urban flooding.
