From Jaipur to Varanasi: 5 Vande Bharat getaways from Delhi

If you have been putting off a getaway because of limited time, India’s expanding Vande Bharat Express network offers another option. With modern coaches, faster travel times, and fewer stops on select routes, these trains have made several cities more accessible from Delhi.

While not every destination is practical as a true morning-to-night day trip, some routes can work well for an early departure and late return, depending on the current timetable. Here are five destinations to consider.

Jaipur, Rajasthan

A day in Jaipur can focus on the old city’s major sights. Visit the Hawa Mahal, explore the City Palace and, if time permits, head towards Amber Fort. You can also make time for a traditional Rajasthani meal before catching your return train.

Dehradun, Uttarakhand

For a change of scenery, Dehradun offers a mix of urban attractions and access to the Himalayan foothills. The Delhi–Dehradun Vande Bharat has made the journey more convenient for travellers looking for a quick escape from the capital.

A day can include a visit to Robber’s Cave, a stop at Sahastradhara and time exploring the city’s cafés and local food scene. If you have only one day, it is better to stay within Dehradun rather than attempt to squeeze in too many nearby destinations.

Chandigarh

Chandigarh is a good option for travellers who prefer architecture, urban planning and relaxed city experiences. The Delhi–Chandigarh Vande Bharat route makes the city accessible for a quick rail getaway.

Start with the Rock Garden, followed by Sukhna Lake. Architecture enthusiasts can explore the city’s iconic modernist landmarks associated with architect Le Corbusier. With careful planning, you can also fit in a leisurely lunch before returning to Delhi.

Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh

Varanasi is a more ambitious option for a day trip, but the Vande Bharat connection has significantly improved access from Delhi. The journey is considerably longer than the Jaipur or Chandigarh options, so travellers should check the current timetable carefully before planning a same-day return.

If you do attempt it, prioritise a few experiences rather than trying to cover the entire city. Walk along the ghats, explore the lanes of the old city and experience the spiritual atmosphere around the Ganga. Depending on your train timings, you may also be able to attend an evening Ganga Aarti.

Ajmer, Rajasthan

Ajmer can be combined with Jaipur on a longer Rajasthan itinerary, but it also works as a standalone rail getaway. The Delhi–Ajmer Vande Bharat connects the capital with Rajasthan’s historic city.

The Ajmer Sharif Dargah is the city’s most prominent attraction, while Ana Sagar Lake offers a quieter stop. If you have enough time, you can also consider extending the trip towards Pushkar, although doing so on a same-day Vande Bharat itinerary requires careful planning.
