APDolly Parton, the transformative singer-songwriter, cultural ambassador, and global icon whose vivid storytelling and soaring vocals redefined American music, has died at the age of 80.
Her passing was confirmed on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, by her family.
"Hey everyone, my name is Brian Seaver, son of Cassie Parton, and I'm representing the Parton and Owens family today, announcing the passing of my Aunt Dolly Rebecca Parton-Dean, sister, sis, aunt granny to one generation and Gigi to the next. This video announcement is something Dolly asked of me years ago, before I fully absorbed it as a future reality. As her head of security for more than two decades, a role my father Larry held before me, I have imagined the heaviness of this moment but haven't truly felt it until now," read the statement.
For over six decades, Parton bridged genres, generations, and political divides with an unmatched combination of musical genius, sharp self-awareness, and relentless philanthropy.
From her humble beginnings in rural East Tennessee to becoming one of the most successful artists in recorded history, her journey remains one of the most remarkable sagas in modern popular culture.
From a Smoky Mountain cabin to international stardom
Born in 1946 into extreme poverty in a one-room cabin in Sevier County, Tennessee, Parton was the fourth of 12 children raised by Lee and Avie Lee Parton. Her musical talent surfaced early, nurtured by her mother’s traditional folk balladry and church singing.
By age ten, she was performing on local television and radio programs, and at thirteen, she made her debut at the historic Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, where she was introduced by Johnny Cash.
The day after graduating from high school in 1964, Parton packed her belongings and moved to Nashville to pursue music full-time. Her major breakthrough arrived when country star Porter Wagoner invited her to join his syndicated television show as a co-host and duet partner.
Though their artistic partnership elevated her national profile, Parton quickly outgrew the collaborator role, striking out on a solo trajectory that would eclipse traditional genre boundaries.
The songwriting genius behind generation-defining anthems
At the heart of Parton’s success was a songwriting discipline that yielded hundreds of original compositions. In a single legendary 24-hour period in 1973, she wrote both "Jolene" and "I Will Always Love You"—two tracks that became cornerstone compositions of 20th-century music.
While "Jolene" captured raw vulnerability and emotional confrontation, "I Will Always Love You" served as a tender artistic farewell to Wagoner. Decades later, Whitney Houston’s soaring pop rendition turned the song into one of the best-selling singles in history.
Throughout her recording career, Parton accumulated 25 Billboard country No. 1 singles and placed 47 albums in the country Top 10.
In 1980, she achieved massive crossover pop success with "9 to 5," the title anthem for the hit comedy film in which she co-starred alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.
The track earned her an Academy Award nomination and solidified her standing as a multi-talented force across television, cinema, and radio.
An empire built on generosity and business acumen
Beyond her artistic achievements, Parton established herself as an extraordinarily astute business mogul.
In 1986, she invested in a regional park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, transforming it into Dollywood—a major entertainment hub that continues to drive regional tourism and provide thousands of jobs in the Appalachian area.
She also co-founded Sandollar Productions, a media company behind hugely successful film and television properties including Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the Father of the Bride series.
Her commercial success was matched by a deep commitment to philanthropy. Through her Imagination Library, founded in 1995 to honor her illiterate father, Parton provided more than 150 million free books to children worldwide.
During times of national crisis, her generosity was equally swift: she coordinated relief efforts for victims of the 2016 Smoky Mountain wildfires, funded bald eagle conservation efforts, and made a pivotal $1 million donation to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2020 that accelerated research for the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.
Wit, glamour, and an unwavering cultural footprint
Parton’s distinct aesthetic—marked by towering blonde wigs, elaborate rhinestoned gowns, and an hourglass silhouette—was delivered with a self-deprecating humor that disarmed critics and endeared her to millions.
Her famous quip, "It takes a lot of money to look this cheap," highlighted an artist in complete control of her image and narrative.
Her universal appeal transcended traditional cultural lines. She advocated for literacy, supported civil rights causes, and earned the admiration of younger generations through artistic collaborations with performers ranging from Brad Paisley and Kesha to her goddaughter, Miley Cyrus.
Throughout her public life, her anchor remained her 59-year marriage to Carl Dean, who preceded her in death in March 2025.
Dolly Parton leaves behind a legacy defined not only by her vast catalogue of music and commercial achievements, but by the warmth, empathy, and grace with which she shared her gifts with the world.
