Banks across India will remain closed on Saturday, August 22, 2026, as it is the fourth Saturday of the month. Under Reserve Bank of India (RBI) rules, banks remain shut on the second and fourth Saturdays, though digital banking and ATM services will continue to be available.

The holiday is in accordance with the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) rules under which banks remain closed on the fourth Saturday of every month.

Customers planning to visit a bank branch today for banking activities will have to wait until the next working day.

    Why are banks closed today?

August 22 is the fourth Saturday of the month, which makes it a scheduled bank holiday under the RBI’s banking holiday rules. The second and fourth Saturdays are observed as holidays for bank branches.

The holiday applies to physical branch operations, so customers who need to visit a branch for banking-related work will be unable to complete those activities today.

What about UPI, ATMs and online banking?

While bank branches are closed, customers can continue to use digital and self-service banking facilities for routine transactions.

UPI and other digital payment services can be used for payments, while ATMs can be used for cash withdrawals and other available services. Customers, therefore, do not necessarily have to wait for bank branches to reopen to conduct routine transactions.

However, people whose banking work requires a physical visit to a branch will have to plan their visit after the holiday.

    Banks will remain closed tomorrow

Customers planning to complete bank-related work in person will have to wait one more day, as Sunday, August 23, is also a bank holiday.

People who need to visit a branch in person will have to wait until Monday, August 24, when banks reopen.

    Three more closures in August

The RBI holiday further lists three more holidays during the coming week.

On August 25, the holiday is listed as First Onam/Milad-i-Sherif (the Birthday of the Prophet Muhammad).

On August 26, banks will observe Id-E-Milad/Baravafat/Milad-un-Nabi (Birthday of Prophet Mohammad)/Thiruvonam, according to the holiday matrix.

Another holiday is listed for August 28, covering Raksha Bandhan/Pang-Lhabsol/Friday following Eid-i-Milad-ul-Nabi/Sree Narayana Guru Jayanthi/Ayyankali Jayanthi.

Customers planning to visit bank branches during the coming week should therefore check the holiday details before visiting a branch.
