Matt Deitke rejected Meta’s $125 million AI offer, but Mark Zuckerberg personally stepped in with a staggering $250 million package to bring the 24-year-old researcher to Meta’s Superintelligence Lab
Synopsis
AI prodigy Matt Deitke, 24, reportedly rejected Meta’s $125 million offer before CEO Mark Zuckerberg personally stepped in. Meta then raised the package to about $250 million, underscoring the fierce competition for top AI talent. Meta dramatically increased the proposed compensation to around $250 million over four years after the meeting.

At just 24, AI researcher Matt Deitke has become one of the most closely watched young names in artificial intelligence after reportedly turning down a massive offer from Meta. The company initially offered Deitke about $125 million over four years to join its Superintelligence Lab. He declined. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg then personally met with him, and the company reportedly returned with a package worth roughly $250 million, including up to $100 million in the first year.

Deitke eventually accepted, highlighting just how fiercely technology companies are competing for elite AI talent. Deitke began his academic career in a computer science PhD programme at the University of Washington. He later left the programme to focus more directly on artificial intelligence research.
His next major step came at the Allen Institute for AI (AI2) in Seattle, where he worked on advanced AI research involving vision, language and embodied intelligence. His research quickly earned attention in the AI community.

Matt Deitke
One of Deitke’s important projects was ProcTHOR, a platform designed to create large-scale interactive environments for training and evaluating embodied AI systems. The work earned an Outstanding Paper Award at NeurIPS 2022, one of the biggest recognitions in AI research.

Deitke also became closely associated with Molmo, AI2’s family of open vision-language models. The technology combines visual understanding with language, helping AI systems process information beyond text alone. That experience became particularly valuable as the industry moved toward multimodal AI and AI agents capable of interacting with digital environments.
Deitke later moved into entrepreneurship, co-founding Vercept, an AI startup focused on computer-use agents. The company's goal was to develop AI systems capable of doing more than answering questions. Its agents were designed to interact with computers and complete tasks on behalf of users.

Vercept reportedly raised $16.5 million in early funding, with investors including former Google CEO Eric Schmidt. The startup's focus also reflected a broader shift in the AI industry — from chatbots that generate responses to autonomous agents that can take action.
Deitke's experience sits across several areas that are becoming central to the AI race: multimodal models, computer-use agents, embodied AI and autonomous systems. That combination made him an attractive target for Meta as the company expanded its push into advanced AI.
Meta's Superintelligence Lab has become a major part of Zuckerberg's AI strategy, with the company competing against other technology giants for a limited pool of highly experienced researchers.

Deitke reportedly rejected Meta's first $125 million offer. Zuckerberg then personally met with him to discuss Meta's AI ambitions.
Following the meeting, Meta dramatically increased the proposed compensation to around $250 million over four years. The reported package could include as much as $100 million during the first year, making the recruitment one of the most eye-catching examples of the AI talent war. Deitke ultimately agreed to join Meta.
