Navi Mumbai :- The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is setting an inspiring example for eco-conscious celebrations with its latest initiatives during the upcoming Ganeshotsav festival. Under the visionary leadership of Municipal Commissioner Shri. Rajesh Narvekar, NMMC is actively promoting eco-friendly practices to preserve the environment while maintaining the grandeur of this cherished festival.
In an official announcement dated September 11, 2023, NMMC revealed its comprehensive plan, which includes the construction of 139 artificial immersion ponds across Navi Mumbai. This move aims to prevent water pollution and promote sustainable practices during the Ganeshotsav festivities.
One of the key highlights of this year’s approach is the decision not to charge any fees for setting up mandaps (pavilions) during Shri Ganeshotsav, following instructions from the Chief Minister of Maharashtra State, Mr. Eknath Shinde. This decision has been enthusiastically welcomed by all Ganeshotsav mandals, making it easier for them to participate in the celebrations.
To streamline the process further, NMMC introduced an online facility for mandals to apply for permission to set up pavilions, ensuring a smoother administrative process. Special rooms have been established in each department office to facilitate this, and efforts are being made to expedite permissions.
NMMC is also addressing the issue of water pollution in the region’s lakes. Approximately 30 percent of the reservoirs in the 14 main lakes now feature gabion walls, allowing citizens to immerse Lord Ganesha idols in designated areas and thereby prevent water pollution. This environmentally conscious approach has garnered praise at the national level.
In a bid to encourage citizens to celebrate Ganeshotsav in an eco-friendly manner, NMMC is constructing numerous artificial immersion ponds across all eight divisions of the city. Under the supervision of City Engineer Shri. Sanjay Desai, a total of 139 artificial lakes will be created, increasing by five compared to the previous year. These ponds will be strategically placed to ensure residents have easy access to immersion sites near their homes, enhancing convenience and reducing environmental impact.
The locations for these artificial ponds have been carefully selected by the Circle and Engineering Department, with construction already underway. The distribution includes 19 in Belapur Division, 24 in Nerul Division, 16 in Vashi Division, 17 in Turbhe Division, 15 in Koparkhairane Division, 21 in Ghansoli Division, 18 in Airoli Division, and 9 in Digha Division. This thoughtful approach will accommodate the immersion of 22 traditional and 139 artificial idols at 161 immersion sites, thus ensuring a smoother and more emotional experience for all participants.
Navi Mumbai’s commitment to eco-friendly practices has solidified its reputation as an environmentally conscious and clean city. The significant number of artificial lakes being created this year demonstrates a proactive step toward environmental protection, with the city’s enthusiastic residents playing a pivotal role in this endeavor.
Last year’s introduction of artificial immersion ponds received an overwhelmingly positive response. Of the 27,808 Lord Ganesha idols immersed during the festival, 14,090 were immersed in these artificial lakes, showcasing the community’s dedication to environmental awareness.
Municipal Commissioner Shri. Rajesh Narvekar emphasizes the importance of using eco-friendly Shrimurthy idols and encouraging citizens to immerse them at home or at nearby artificial immersion sites. This responsible approach aligns with NMMC’s commitment to preserving the environment while celebrating traditions.
As Navi Mumbai gears up for Ganeshotsav, these eco-friendly initiatives by the NMMC set a commendable example for responsible and sustainable celebrations, ensuring the preservation of the region’s natural beauty for generations to come.
