Navi Mumbai :- Every year, on Senior Citizens’ Day, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation organizes a series of diverse competitions to ignite the passion for arts and sports among the elderly residents of the city. This initiative has witnessed enthusiastic participation from senior citizens, bringing them immense joy and pride.
A total of 334 senior citizens, comprising both men and women, participated in 14 different categories of arts and sports competitions. The winners of these competitions will be honored at a special event on October 1st, coinciding with Senior Citizens’ Day, at the Vishnudas Bhawe Natyagriha in Vashi.
Among the noteworthy performances, 16 seniors showcased their storytelling talents, 5 seniors brought laughter with their humor, 7 excelled in costume design, 3 dazzled with individual dance performances, and 10 participated in a telephone skills competition, all held on September 25th at Namunmapa School in Vashi.
Furthermore, on September 26th, 8 seniors demonstrated their acting skills, 37 displayed their singing talents, and 23 competed in poetry recitation at the same school, showcasing their literary prowess.
In addition to these competitions, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation organized the Karum Sports Competition at the K. Sitaram Master Garden in Sanpada. A total of 125 men and 4 women senior citizens participated, showcasing their athletic abilities. Additionally, 22 men and 3 women seniors participated in a chess competition, demonstrating their strategic thinking. The Breeze Game competition, held on September 27th at the Naga Gana Patil Garden in Seawoods, saw 40 senior citizens competing, achieving great success.
Lastly, the essay competition with the theme “I Speak as a Senior Citizen…!” and a letter-writing competition to a family member saw 15 participants and 16 participants respectively, all of whom displayed their literary skills.
All the participants exhibited outstanding performances in these competitions, and the best among them will be honored on October 1st, 2023, at the Vishnudas Bhawe Natyagriha in Vashi. Additionally, senior citizens who have reached the age of 75 between October 1, 2022, and September 30, 2023, will be recognized, along with couples celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary during the same period.
These celebrations not only honor senior citizens but also highlight Navi Mumbai as a unique city that values its elderly population. The Municipal Commissioner, Mr. Rajesh Narwekar, has extended a warm invitation to all senior citizens to actively participate in the Senior Citizens’ Day program and make it a memorable event.
