Navi Mumbai :- In an effort to promote environmentally friendly celebrations, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has taken significant steps to organize the ‘Shree Ganeshotsav 2023’ festival meticulously. Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar has spearheaded these initiatives, ensuring that the city is well-prepared for the immersion of Lord Ganesha idols. Apart from the 22 natural immersion sites, the corporation has constructed 141 artificial immersion ponds across various departments to control the crowds and prevent water pollution.
In response to the citizens’ demand for a more eco-conscious Ganesh Chaturthi, the municipal corporation has significantly increased the number of immersion sites. Last year, they created seven new artificial immersion ponds in addition to the existing ones, emphasizing the importance of environmental awareness among the residents.
Navi Mumbai’s commitment to environmental conservation has earned it the distinction of being Maharashtra’s first ‘A’ grade municipal corporation under the ‘Majhi Vasundhara’ campaign. This recognition reflects the city’s citizens’ dedication to preserving the environment, including their efforts to minimize water pollution during Ganesha idol immersion.
In coordination with various departments, the municipal corporation has implemented a well-organized plan for Ganesh Chaturthi, ensuring seamless execution. This includes setting up CCTV cameras for security, providing backup generators at all locations, and deploying medical teams near immersion sites.
Furthermore, the municipal corporation has encouraged citizens to use eco-friendly materials for Ganesha idols and to deposit nirmalya (religious offerings) in separate bins. They have also allowed volunteers and lifeguards to manage the immersion process at 22 immersion sites.
To address the issue of water pollution, 141 artificial immersion ponds have been constructed across the city, strategically placed in different wards to handle the increased demand during the festival. Additionally, the municipal corporation has made provisions for the disposal of nirmalya and set up independent facilities for the purification of the immersion water.
With these measures in place, Navi Mumbai aims to have a well-organized and eco-friendly Ganesh Chaturthi celebration in 2023. The municipal corporation is working in collaboration with the police department, the MSDCL, and other relevant authorities to ensure the smooth execution of the plan, emphasizing the importance of environmental consciousness and water pollution control during the festivities.
