Washington: US Second Lady Usha Vance nearly stumbled while exiting a helicopter at Joint Base Andrews in Prince George’s County, Maryland, on Monday, October 5, while carrying her 10-week-old son, Alec Neel Vance, in a baby carrier.

A video of the incident circulating on social media shows Usha, 40, descending the aircraft's steps while carrying the infant against her chest and holding a large bag. She appears to miss a step but quickly catches the railing and regains her balance, keeping the baby secure.

The incident has since sparked questions online about whether anyone accompanying the Second Lady should have stepped forward to assist her, particularly given that she was carrying a newborn while navigating the helicopter stairs in high heels and with additional luggage.

Questions Over Protocol And Security

Several social media users questioned why personnel standing nearby did not appear to move towards Usha after she stumbled. Some also asked whether security or military protocol restricts personnel from physically assisting a senior official unless necessary.

Courage first. Protocol second. A mother and child never recover alone.

A close call that deserves a calm, professional look. @SLOTUS missed a step leaving the aircraft, holding her two-month-old and a large bag.

She caught the rail, steadied herself, and kept the child secure. Glad the baby is ok. No one beside her moved.

@VP @JDVance @MarioNawfal @SecretService @WhiteHouse — this is not gossip. It is a duty question. At the height of power, protocol can quietly replace care.

Officers are not statues. Respect for rank is not a reason to freeze when a mother and a newborn are at risk.

The first duty is courage with humanity: step forward, steady a mother, protect a child. Full care before protocol.

Leaders and those who guard them, the standard is simple. No mother should have to recover alone. 🇺🇸

However, there is no confirmed information establishing that protocol prevented anyone from helping Usha, and the footage alone does not establish why those around her did not intervene.

Where Was JD Vance?

The video also led to questions about why Vice President JD Vance was not seen assisting Usha during the moment. It is unclear from the available footage where the Vice President was at the time of the incident or whether he had already exited the aircraft.

Usha managed to steady herself without falling, and the infant appeared to remain secure in the carrier. There were no immediate reports of either Usha or the baby being injured.

The incident has nevertheless raised a broader question about balancing security protocol with immediate assistance when a person carrying a young child faces a potentially dangerous situation.

While the video has prompted criticism of those nearby, it does not by itself establish that any individual violated protocol or failed a formal duty of care.

The incident has also prompted questions about the arrangements made for the Second Lady while travelling with a newborn. Usha and Vice President JD Vance welcomed their fourth child, Alec, in July 2026. The couple also have three older children Ewan, 9, Vivek, 6, and Mirabel, 4.
