The National Medical Commission (NMC) has granted permission to the Bagalkot Medical College and Research Institute to admit 100 students for the first year of MBBS from the academic year 2026-27.

The State government established the institute on the premises of the government hospital in Bagalkot last year.

The Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of the NMC has issued a Letter of Permission (LoP). This follows the decision of the second Appeal Committee regarding the establishment of the new medical college in Navanagar, Sector 11, Bagalkot. Earlier, the NMC had rejected the application filed by the college.

Subsequently, an appeal was filed, and the first Appeal Committee issued its order on July 23, 2026. Following the subsequent proceedings and the decision of the second Appeal Committee, the NMC has now issued the LoP for the college.

Holabasu Shettar, member of the government medical college agitation committee, has welcomed the decision. “It is a milestone in the district’s healthcare and medical education infrastructure. The commencement of the medical college is expected to create opportunities for students aspiring to pursue medical education while also strengthening the availability of trained medical professionals and healthcare facilities in the region,” he said.

He thanked former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and incumbent Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar for setting up the college.

A release stated that the permission has been granted in accordance with the provisions of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, and the Establishment of Medical Institutions, Assessment and Rating Regulations, 2023. The regulations require applicants seeking to establish new medical colleges to submit the prescribed scheme and mandatory documents to the MARB.
