Malayinkeezhu police record arrest of woman for alleged murder of infant daughter

The Malayinkeezhu police on Friday (September 11, 2026) formally recorded the arrest of Vilavoorkal native Christy for the alleged murder of her one-and-a-half-year-old infant Ivana at their home a day ago.
The arrest was recorded at the Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College Hospital, where she remains under medical treatment. Following the crime, the investigation revealed that Christy attempted suicide by consuming sleeping pills after allegedly committing the crime.
She was apprehended shortly after her daughter was found with a severe injury to her neck. The infant later succumbed to the injury at a hospital. The mother purportedly confessed to having murdered the child inside their room.
Meanwhile, the child’s body was taken to their house after the completion of the post-mortem examination. A large number of family members, friends and local residents gathered in the area to pay their final respects, followed by the funeral rites. The mortal remains were later buried in accordance with the family’s customs.
According to the police, the crime is suspected to be linked to domestic issues and marital dispute between Christy and her husband Abhijith. Investigators are also examining preliminary indications that Christy may have suffered from postpartum depression, which could have contributed to the mental distress leading to the incident.
The investigation team is expected to seek custody of the accused to gather evidence and ascertain the circumstances that could have led to the murder.
