Chinese President Xi Jinping will arrive on Saturday morning on a 24-hour visit for the BRICS summit and a substantive bilateral dialogue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi that would give broad political direction to ties and could set in place the framework to boost economic partnership to reduce yawning trade deficit and ensure predictability of supply chains.

Xi, on his visit to India after seven years, will be accompanied by a big delegation and will depart on Sunday afternoon, ET has learnt. All eyes will be on the meeting between Modi and Xi, on the BRICS summit margins, that is expected to be substantive and hopefully launch a process to further stabilise ties that were ruptured following the Galwan clash.

Ties started stabilising after Modi and Xi met in Kazan on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in 2024 followed by their meeting in Tianjin on the margins of the SCO summit in 2025. However, progress to improve the overall health of ties has been slow but steady. The Line of Actual Control has been largely incident-free over the past year.

Sources familiar with the India-China ties reiterated that the state of the border will decide the state of bilateral ties. Ahead of Xi’s visit, India and China had last month reached an eight-point understanding to improve border management measures for stabilising LAC. Last month, ET had reported that India and China are exploring a new framework to facilitate business-to-business exchanges and Chinese investments for accelerated capital flow.

Beijing may unveil an investment package for India, including a special economic zone with easier access to the sea route, during Xi’s visit. Of particular note is a likely push by Beijing for its electric vehicles, including leading EV-maker BYD, into the Indian market, ET had reported.

The Chinese side wants to capitalise on Xi’s first visit to India since 2019, and is keen to make announcements for possible investments, including in the export processing zone, EThad reported.
