An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 struck Xizang, Tibet, on Thursday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake occurred at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles), according to GFZ, Reuters reported.

This comes days after catastrophic floods struck the Tibet-Nepal border, killing 21 people in Tibet and at least 1,252 people in Nepal. The death toll from the disaster, which struck on August 26, has reached 1,273.

The Nepal catastrophe was triggered by a glacial collapse that sent ice, mud, rocks and fast-moving water surging through a valley in Nepal, wiping out entire settlements in their path. Videos showed people attempting to flee as walls of water and debris swallowed buildings, tore down bridges and power lines, and washed away trees, boulders and vehicles.

Continuous rainfall in Nepal

With rainfall continuing in the upstream areas of the Bhotekoshi River on Thursday, water levels could rise in the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers, as well as in smaller rivers and rivulets flowing through Nepal’s Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts, said Saraswati Bishta, a technician at the Flood Forecasting Division of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, news agency PTI reported.

Data released by Nepal Police on Thursday showed that 355 bodies had been recovered in Chitawan district, 218 in Nawalparasi East and 208 in Nawalparasi West. The latter figure includes 18 bodies recovered in India and subsequently handed over to authorities in Nawalparasi West. Another 177 bodies were recovered in Nuwakot.

Meanwhile, 127 bodies were recovered in Rasuwa, 69 in Gorkha, 60 in Dhading and 38 in Tanahun.

Across the border in China, the death toll from the flash floods that hit Gyirong county in Tibet near the Nepal border has risen to 21, while 541 people remained missing as of Wednesday, according to PTI.

100 Nepali's missing in Tibet

Around 100 Nepali nationals remain missing in Tibet following the devastating flash floods, Nepal’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lok Bahadur Chhetri said.

About 3,000 Nepalis who had travelled to Tibet for pilgrimage and business were stranded in the region following the floods. Of them, more than 2,500 have safely returned to Nepal through the Hilsa and Tatopani border crossings, while some were evacuated by air, Chhetri said.

Meanwhile, around 1,500 Nepali nationals are still stranded at Tibet’s Kerung border point. Authorities from Nepal and China are holding discussions on arrangements to safely evacuate them to Nepal, the spokesperson said.
