CPI(M) Polit Bureau denounces ED move against Pinarayi Vijayan, calls it political vendetta by Modi govt

By Sohail Khan 10 September 2026, 12:19 pm

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] Polit Bureau on Thursday (September 10, 2026) denounced the move of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) asking the Kerala Police to register a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act, against Leader of the Opposition and former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, former Public Works Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas, and T. Veena, Mr. Vijayan’s daughter and Mr. Riyas’s spouse.

In a statement, the CPI(M) said it was “evident from the outset” that the investigation against Ms.Veena was ‘only a pretext’ to target the then Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. “This is typical of the way the Central agencies are being used by the Modi government to target Opposition leaders,” it said.

‘Double standards of Congress’

It further said that the endorsement of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Sunny Joseph of the ED action and his demand for a case to be registered exposes the “double standards” of the Congress party.

"The same Congress opposes the ED actions against many of its leaders, including Rahul Gandhi. It may be recalled that previously a Congress MLA from Keralam had gone to the Vigilance Court, the High Court and later even to the Supreme Court, to get a case registered against Pinarayi Vijayan. But the Courts had rejected his plea in this matter. It is this case that is sought to be foisted now," said the statement.

The Polit Bureau said that the V.D. Satheesan government should not act as “an agent” of the ED. The party will oppose this political vendetta with all its resources, politically and legally, said the statement.
