Bengaluru commuters, take note! Traffic police change flyover & elevated corridor rules; two-wheelers, autos & goods vehicles face new restrictions
    Synopsis

Bengaluru Traffic Rules: Bengaluru Traffic Police are set to roll out traffic restrictions in phases on two key elevated corridors. Initially, goods vehicles will face restrictions on the Airport Road Elevated Corridor, while two-wheelers and autorickshaws will continue to be allowed to use it for the time being. Similar restrictions on goods vehicles will also be introduced on the Electronic City Elevated Corridor, with further limitations to be implemented based on traffic assessments.

Bengaluru traffic update: Restrictions on Airport Road, Electronic City flyovers to be phased in

Bengaluru Traffic Police has decided to introduce traffic restrictions on two major elevated corridors in a phased manner after assessing how earlier restrictions affected traffic flow across the city.

The decision comes after restrictions were implemented on four of five major flyovers and elevated corridors. A preliminary field assessment found that traffic movement remained smooth on the BGS Flyover, Peenya Flyover and Double Decker Flyover.

However, officials observed congestion and traffic conflicts on the International Airport Road Elevated Corridor, prompting them to change the way restrictions will be introduced there.

Airport Road Elevated Corridor restrictions changed

The International Airport Road Elevated Corridor, covering the stretch from Sanjeev Nagar Cross to Vidyashilpa Junction, had seen multiple categories of vehicles being diverted at the approach ramps.

According to Bengaluru Traffic Police, the diversion of goods vehicles, two-wheelers and autorickshaws at the same time led to traffic conflicts, queues and congestion around the diversion points. It also affected traffic movement on the adjoining roads at ground level.

To address the issue, restrictions on the Airport Road Elevated Corridor will now be implemented in phases.

Goods vehicles to face restrictions first

Under the first phase, the notified restrictions on goods vehicles will continue during the prescribed timings.

However, two-wheelers and autorickshaws will currently be allowed to use the elevated corridor.

Traffic police have advised two-wheeler riders to use the leftmost lane as far as possible, follow lane discipline and avoid unsafe overtaking. Riders have also been urged to maintain safe speeds, with the maximum speed limit set at 60 kmph.

Electronic City Elevated Corridor restrictions from September 11

A similar phased approach will be adopted on the Electronic City Elevated Corridor from September 11, 2026.

During the first phase, restrictions on goods vehicles will be implemented, while two-wheelers will continue to be permitted on the elevated corridor.

Further restrictions will be introduced later based on traffic conditions and the results of the assessment.

Bengaluru Traffic Police to review traffic conditions

The remaining notified restrictions will be introduced in a calibrated and phased manner, depending on traffic flow, road safety and how effectively vehicles can be diverted at the approach ramps.

Officials will also consider the impact of the diversions on adjoining roads before introducing further restrictions.

The phased approach is aimed at improving road safety while avoiding unnecessary congestion at key flyover entry and exit points.
