World Vada Pav Day 2026: Why Is The Mumbai Street Food Celebrated?

World Vada Pav Day is annually observed on August 23 to honour Mumbaikars staple street food.
Vada pav consists of a deep-fried potato fritter, or batata vada, placed inside a soft pav, usually accompanied by spicy green and red chutneys. Fried green chillies are also commonly served alongside it.
The origins of vada pav are closely associated with Mumbai in the 1960s. Food historians and popular accounts often credit street-food vendor Ashok Vaidya with popularising the snack near Dadar railway station.
The day celebrates more than just a snack. It recognises Mumbai’s street-food culture, local entrepreneurship and the everyday food traditions that have shaped the city’s identity.
The rise of Mumbai’s textile mills also played an important role in vada pav’s popularity.
