‘Why are you shutting show?’: How Lata Mangeshkar fought for CID after it was pulled off air

Sony Entertainment Television’s popular crime show CID, which premiered in 1998 and ran for over two decades, enjoys a massive cult following. However, the show was abruptly pulled off the air in October 2018. In a recent interview, actor Dayanand Shetty, who played Daya in CID, revealed that late singer Lata Mangeshkar was a huge fan of the show. He also opened up about the internal politics that he believes contributed to its conclusion.

During a podcast with Siddharth Kannan, Shetty shared, “Lata ji was such a big fan. She loved us. She was a big support for us,” adding that she helped them when CID went off air abruptly. “Even when the show went off air, she fought for us. She even called Sony America and the channel in India. She told them, ‘I watch this program, why do you have a problem? Why are you shutting the show?'”

The actor was then asked about the reason behind a legacy TV show shutting down suddenly. “There was internal politics. It is hurting them now. Why would we care? We moved on. Maybe, someone in the channel had a personal vendetta. They started from 2016. They wanted to replace our producers, which the actors did not agree to,” he replied.

Dayanand continued, “We don’t know Sony. The show just came on that channel, but we belonged to Fireworks Production. For 21 years, we had no legal contracts, didn’t even sign a single page. Everything was verbal between us and Uppoor sahab (Pradeep Uppoor, co-owner of Fireworks). When they wanted to get new producers in 2016, they were shocked to know that artistes don’t have any contracts. It was a surprise for them.”

The second season of CID returned to television in December 2024, with new episodes airing on Sony Entertainment Television and streaming on SonyLIV. The season later began streaming on Netflix in February 2025. “I don’t know if it’s a loss for them or not. I felt bad initially when I got emails and there was a buzz on social media. People still want to revive the show even today.”
