A suspect in the killings of as many as five people and several domestic animals was found dead Sunday, August 23, officials said. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office identified Benjamin Charles Parker, 36, as the suspect of a “complex investigation” after the bodies of five people and several animals were found on a rural property in Oregon.
“Officers from the Enumclaw Police Department located Parker’s vehicle and found him deceased inside,” the sheriff’s office said Sunday, according to NBC News. “It is believed he died by suicide.”
Enumclaw is a small city in Washington state. The sheriff’s office said that detectives do not believe that the quintuple homicide was random.
Who was Benjamin Charles Parker?
Not much has been revealed about Parker yet, but Washington County Sheriff Caprice Massey said they believe Parker “was known to the subjects.”
On Saturday morning, August 22, officials initially responded to a 911 call about a vehicle fire in unincorporated Washington County, outside the city of Forest Grove. Later at a news conference, Washington County Sheriff’s Detective Shannon Wilde said that they are trying to confirm the identities of the victims.
Wilde stated that the “large scene” is on a rural property with some other homes around and “a lot of vegetation.”
“I will say that in my 22 years here, I have not been a part of or witnessed a scene quite this complex involving this type of an investigation,” said Massey.
The sheriff’s office has confirmed that there is no continued threat to the public.
Wilde said that authorities were trying to identify the victims and notify their next of kin and at the same time working on a “very active investigation with a lot of moving pieces.”
“Any time you have one person deceased, let alone five, that's a logistical challenge,” Wilde said, noting the complexity of the investigation, as well as the large crime scene.
