As the United States and Canada find themselves locked in a trade dispute yet again, President Donald Trump has hit back at the neighbouring nation. Taking to social media, the US president accused Canada of asking too much while renewing his 51st state jibe.

"Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one!!! They have also charged our great farmers, for many years, massive amounts of Tariffs. No more!!!" Trump wrote on Truth Social.

This is not the first time the US President has called Canada as the 51st state of the United States. Trump's jibe dates back to 2025 when Justin Trudeau was the Prime Minister of Canada.

During his presidential campaign and upon his return to the White House, Trump has called on Canada to join the US as a new state due to the ongoing trade disputes.

Calling the imposition of tariffs "an attack on Canada," Carney stated that the details will be released later this week as Canada will focus on protecting its economy and national interests.

The US announced a 50 per cent tariff on Canada after trade negotiations with the neighbouring country fell through.

Announcing US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said that “Canada declined to finalize the trade deal under the terms agreed earlier this week.”

He added Canada declined despite Washington’s offers to reduce tariffs on sectors such as steel and aluminum.

Carney hit back, calling the last minute changes by the US “unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal.”

This development comes days after Trump said that the United States "should be able to have a deal with Canada," citing his "good relationship" with Carney and announced a temporary halt in any tariffs against Ottawa.
