What happened to Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone 6666 spin-off? His surprising explanation involves the real Four Sixes Ranch
Synopsis
Yellowstone fans excited to explore the Four Sixes Ranch for its long-awaited spin-off will be sorely disappointed. However, its creator Taylor Sheridan has revealed that the project has been shelved. In 2021, Paramount announced plans for a show titled 6666, which would be set in the present day and on the Four Sixes Ranch in Texas.

For years, Yellowstone fans have wondered what happened to one of the franchise's most anticipated spin-offs. Now, Taylor Sheridan has finally offered an answer about 6666, the planned series that was expected to take viewers from the Dutton Ranch in Montana to the legendary Four Sixes Ranch in Texas.
The project was first announced in 2021, with fans expecting it to expand the Yellowstone universe into the world of one of America's most famous working ranches. But five years later, Sheridan has revealed why viewers should not expect the series to unfold as originally imagined.

Taylor Sheridan explains what happened to Yellowstone 6666
Sheridan recently addressed the long-running questions surrounding 6666 during an appearance on Dale Brisby's Rodeo Time podcast. The Yellowstone creator made his position clear while discussing the future of the project.
“There’s never going to be one,” Sheridan said. The comment puts an end to years of speculation surrounding the series, which was supposed to explore life at the historic Four Sixes Ranch.
The ranch has already featured prominently in Yellowstone, particularly through Jimmy Hurdstrom's storyline. After being sent to Texas, Jimmy began working at the 6666 Ranch, giving viewers a glimpse into the demanding world of ranching and cowboy culture there.

Why the real 6666 Ranch changed everything
Sheridan's explanation is particularly interesting because his relationship with the Four Sixes Ranch is not limited to the television series. The historic Texas property is part of Sheridan's real-world business interests. He became part of the ownership group that acquired the ranch, making his connection to the location far more personal than simply using it as a filming location.
That appears to have influenced his decision about turning it into another fictional television drama. “I would never fictionalize that ranch,” Sheridan said.

For Sheridan, the Four Sixes is a functioning ranch populated by real people rather than simply a backdrop for fictional characters. Creating an entire scripted series would require inventing storylines, conflicts and personal dramas involving a real community.
Yellowstone fans already saw the ranch through Jimmy
Although 6666 will not become the series many fans were expecting, viewers have already experienced part of its world through Yellowstone. Jimmy's move to Texas introduced audiences to the Four Sixes and showed how different ranch life could be outside the Dutton family's Montana operation.
His time there also became an important part of his character development. That existing storyline may ultimately be the closest fans get to seeing a dedicated 6666 series.
The Four Sixes is more than a TV location
The Four Sixes Ranch has a history stretching back more than a century and remains a working cattle and horse operation. That distinction is important to Sheridan.
While Yellowstone frequently draws inspiration from real ranching communities and the American West, the creator now appears reluctant to turn the Four Sixes itself into a fictional playground.
His comments suggest that protecting the authenticity of the ranch and respecting the people who work there became more important than creating another television franchise.
What this means for the Yellowstone universe
The news does not mean Taylor Sheridan is stepping away from the Yellowstone universe. The franchise has already expanded through projects such as 1883 and 1923, while additional stories connected to the world of the original series continue to attract attention.
But 6666 is different because it was closely connected to a real place that Sheridan now has a personal stake in.
For fans who had spent years waiting for the Texas-set spin-off, Sheridan's latest comments may come as a disappointment. At the same time, his reasoning offers an unusual explanation for why a highly anticipated television project can disappear after years of development.
For now, the Four Sixes Ranch remains part of the Yellowstone story through Jimmy's journey — but the long-awaited standalone series will remain one of the franchise's biggest "what ifs."
