Bhiwandi: The Samajwadi Party (SP) has carried out a significant organisational reshuffle in Bhiwandi, replacing city president Anas Ansari with senior leader Riyaz Azmi. The move comes well before Ansari's scheduled tenure was due to end on June 30, 2027, triggering fresh political speculation over the party's strategy in the city.

Anas Ansari Gets State-Level Responsibility Within Maharashtra SP

Rather than sidelining Ansari, the party has assigned him a new responsibility at the Maharashtra state level, appointing him as a secretary of the Maharashtra Pradesh Samajwadi Party. He has also been made a special invitee to the Mumbai Pradesh executive committee.

The appointments were announced at a programme held in Colaba, Mumbai, where Maharashtra Pradesh Samajwadi Party president Abu Asim Azmi handed over the appointment letter to Riyaz Azmi. At the same programme, former Bhiwandi deputy mayor Ahmed Hussain Siddiqui was appointed as the party's vice-president.

Early Leadership Change Raises Questions Within Political Circles

Ansari had been appointed Bhiwandi city president by Abu Asim Azmi on January 2, 2026, for a tenure of one-and-a-half years, which was scheduled to continue until June 30, 2027. His removal from the city post within a few months of taking charge has therefore raised questions in local political circles. The party, however, has not publicly disclosed a specific reason for the organisational change.

Ansari's appointment earlier this year had been viewed as part of the SP's attempt to strengthen its presence among Bhiwandi's sizeable weaver community. The city has traditionally had a strong presence of the weaving and powerloom industry, making community outreach an important component of local political mobilisation.

Ansari To Continue Role In State Organisation And Party Activities

Despite the change in city leadership, Ansari's elevation to the state organisation indicates that the party intends to retain his services. He has been entrusted with responsibilities in the Maharashtra Pradesh unit as well as the Mumbai Pradesh executive committee. He will also assist with organisational activities until the new city leadership is fully established.

The return of Riyaz Azmi to the city president's post, meanwhile, brings an experienced hand back to the forefront of the Bhiwandi unit. Azmi has previously headed the party's Bhiwandi city organisation and is familiar with the local political and organisational landscape. His reappointment comes at a time when political parties are looking to strengthen their grassroots machinery ahead of the next electoral cycle.

SP Plans Aggressive Campaign On Civic Issues In Bhiwandi

The reshuffle is not limited to appointments. The party leadership has also signalled an aggressive political programme centred on civic issues in Bhiwandi.

Addressing the gathering, Abu Asim Azmi indicated that issues affecting residents would remain at the centre of the party's upcoming activities. He referred to problems related to roads, water supply, drainage, education and healthcare, and said residents had been facing difficulties over basic civic amenities.

Party Announces Plans To Intensify Public Campaigns Against Civic Problems

Azmi said the Samajwadi Party would step up its campaign on public issues and intensify agitation against the administration and government over unresolved civic problems. The announcement suggests that the party intends to move beyond organisational restructuring and increase its presence on the ground through protests and public campaigns.

The new city president, Riyaz Azmi, described the responsibility as a major challenge and said his priority would be to strengthen the party at the booth and grassroots levels and expand its support base.

He also indicated that the party would raise issues concerning basic amenities and would pursue them before the administration. If required, the organisation would take the protest route to press for solutions, he said.

Civic Issues Likely To Shape Political Discourse Ahead Of Elections

The timing of the organisational reshuffle has added significance, as Bhiwandi's civic and political issues are likely to remain important in the run-up to future elections. Problems relating to water supply, damaged roads, drainage, sanitation and healthcare have repeatedly affected residents and could provide political traction to opposition parties seeking to expand their grassroots presence.

The leadership changes have therefore given the Bhiwandi unit a new political configuration Riyaz Azmi returning as city president, Ahmed Hussain Siddiqui taking charge as vice-president and Anas Ansari moving into a state-level organisational role.

For the SP, however, the real test will be whether the reshuffle translates into stronger grassroots mobilisation. The party will have to convert its renewed focus on civic issues into sustained public engagement and an effective organisational network across the city.

The early replacement of Ansari, despite his tenure having been fixed until June 2027, is likely to remain a subject of political discussion. With the party yet to publicly explain the precise reasons behind the change, attention will now shift to the performance of the new city leadership and whether the SP can strengthen its position in Bhiwandi by combining organisational consolidation with an aggressive campaign on civic issues.
