In a move aimed at easing traffic congestion caused by narrow roads, increasing vehicle numbers and roadside parking in the old city area, the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has approved a proposal to construct a multi-level mechanised parking facility near Lifeline Hospital.
The proposal was approved at the general body meeting held on Thursday. The facility, planned on Plot No. 184/1 'A' Part, is expected to accommodate 168 vehicles — 72 cars and 96 two-wheelers.
Old Panvel struggles with parking shortage
The old part of Panvel, known for its traditional peth layout, has several narrow roads. The presence of major markets, government offices, hospitals, commercial establishments and the Panvel bus stand attracts a large number of commuters and vehicles every day. However, inadequate parking space forces motorists to park along roadsides, reducing the carriageway available for moving traffic and resulting in congestion.

Festivals worsen traffic pressure
The problem becomes particularly acute during festivals and the peak shopping season, when footfall in the markets increases significantly. With vehicles occupying road space, traffic movement is further affected.
According to the PMC proposal, the mechanised parking facility will use vertical rotary parking systems and tower parking to maximise parking capacity on the limited plot. The facility is proposed to have capacity for 96 two-wheelers through vertical rotary parking. For four-wheelers, 18 spaces will be provided through the rotary system and another 54 through tower parking, taking the total capacity to 72 cars.
Strategic location near bus stand and market
The plot, located opposite the Panvel bus stand and adjacent to Lifeline Hospital, is already reserved for parking and is currently being used for two-wheeler parking. Given its strategic location close to the city's main market area, the civic body has proposed increasing its capacity through a multi-level system.
The project is estimated to cost more than Rs 13.20 crore, including GST and allied expenses, according to the civic body's proposal. Details relating to the operation, maintenance, parking charges and management of the facility are expected to be worked out as the project progresses.
The civic body expects the facility to encourage motorists to shift from roadside parking to designated spaces, thereby freeing up road space for traffic and reducing inconvenience to pedestrians and motorists.
