Nielsen prepares for ‘agent-first’ media world as AI reshapes content, ad measurement
Synopsis
Nielsen is preparing for an “agent-first” media landscape where AI agents could increasingly determine the content and advertising users encounter, CTO Anil Goel told ET. The shift could complicate audience measurement as AI-generated content expands and audiences fragment across platforms.

Mumbai: Nielsen is preparing for an "agent-first" media environment where personal AI agents could increasingly decide what content and advertising users see, creating a new challenge for media measurement, its CTO Anil Goel told ET.
As AI accelerates content creation and fragments audiences across platforms, devices and formats, Nielsen is preparing for a future where distinguishing human viewing from machine-driven content selection becomes increasingly important.
"How do we measure in that agent-first world, and how do we differentiate between what's viewable by humans versus agents is going to become a very interesting challenge that we are gearing up for," Goel said.
AI is already accelerating content creation, with studio-quality videos that once took days or weeks now being produced in minutes or hours, he said. The resulting proliferation of content will make it harder to measure increasingly fragmented audiences.
Nielsen is combining its panels with first- and third-party data to capture long-tail content, as audiences spread across social media, short- and long-form video, connected TVs and other devices.
The company is also expanding its measurement capabilities through its planned integration with DoubleVerify, which Goel said complements Nielsen's audience measurement with capabilities around trust, safety and brand relevance. "This is a capability that's going to be very relevant worldwide. It's going to be very relevant in India, as both advertisers and publishers increasingly care about the relevance of the ad as well as making sure it's properly displayed, it's properly viewed," he said.
Earlier this month, Nielsen agreed to acquire digital advertising verification platform DoubleVerify in an all-cash transaction valued at about $2.15 billion, as it seeks to build an end-to-end media intelligence platform for the advertising industry.
