Microsoft AI's chief marketing officer Andra Mallard exits after 6 months as Copilot faces intense competition from ChatGPT and Claude. No one is replacing her
Synopsis
Microsoft AI CMO Andra Mallard is leaving after just six months, as the company reshapes its Copilot strategy amid intense competition from OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude. Mallard plans to move her family to Europe to be closer to her ailing father and will remain at Microsoft in an advisory role until early next year. Microsoft is not replacing her.
APThe changes come as Microsoft faces intense competition in the consumer AI market from OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude.
Microsoft has confirmed that Andra Mallard, chief marketing officer of its AI division, is leaving the company just six months after joining from Pinterest, with plans to relocate her family to Europe to be closer to her ailing father.
According to an internal memo viewed by Business Insider, Microsoft executive Yusuf Mehdi told employees that Mallard plans to move her family to Europe in August and step back from her current role. Microsoft confirmed her departure plans and said she will remain with the company until early next year in an advisory capacity. Microsoft has decided not to replace her position at all.

Mallard to remain with Microsoft in advisory role
Mehdi thanked Mallard for her contribution to Microsoft's Copilot marketing strategy during her short tenure.
“I’m grateful for the incredible energy and consumer-centric ethos she’s brought to turbo-charging our Copilot marketing efforts; Andrea has played a key role in advocating for a more unified approach, including the single app experience.”
Mallard joined Microsoft in February after spending more than seven years as Pinterest's chief marketing officer. Her departure comes as Microsoft is also restructuring its approach to marketing Copilot, its flagship generative AI product.

Microsoft changes Copilot marketing strategy
Two people familiar with the matter told Business Insider that Andra Mallard's exit comes as Microsoft AI reassesses its consumer marketing strategy.
The company is moving toward combining its separate consumer and business Copilot apps into a single unified application, part of an effort to simplify the product for users.
Copilot marketing responsibilities are now being consolidated under Microsoft executive Jared Spataro, and Microsoft does not plan to directly replace Mallard as CMO of the AI unit, according to the report.
The changes come as Microsoft faces intense competition in the consumer AI market from OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude.

Copilot has struggled to match rival AI tools
Microsoft has invested heavily in Copilot as it seeks to establish a stronger position in the rapidly expanding generative AI market. However, Copilot has generally trailed ChatGPT and Claude in consumer adoption. The move toward a single Copilot experience is intended to give the company a more unified product and marketing strategy.
Mallard's consumer marketing background was seen as valuable to that effort when she joined Microsoft.

Who is Andra Mallard?
Mallard spent more than seven years as Pinterest's chief marketing officer before joining Microsoft. Before Pinterest, she led marketing at Athleta, Gap's athleisure brand, and served as chief marketing officer at virtual care company Omada Health.
Her experience in consumer marketing was particularly relevant to Microsoft's efforts to broaden Copilot's appeal beyond its traditional workplace audience.
Mallard's work at Microsoft
During her brief tenure, Microsoft was involved in several prominent Copilot marketing campaigns. One campaign featured NFL teams using Copilot in Excel to analyze athlete performance data and create scouting profiles of top prospects in a Super Bowl advertisement.
Microsoft also worked with social media influencers, including Alix Earle, who has posted content featuring Copilot. However, both initiatives were already in development before Mallard joined Microsoft.
Another leadership change at Microsoft AI
Mallard's planned departure follows several leadership changes within Microsoft AI.
In March, Microsoft moved AI chief Mustafa Suleyman into a new role focused on a superintelligence team. The company also consolidated its commercial and consumer Copilot operations under new leadership.
Mallard is expected to remain at Microsoft in an advisory capacity until early next year.
