A Mumbai man allegedly promised marriage to a Thane woman he met on a matrimonial website before using her PAN and salary slips to secure a Rs 6.09 lakh loan in her name. Police said he then asked her to transfer the money to different bank accounts before allegedly failing to return it.

A 28-year-old woman from Thane was allegedly cheated of more than Rs 6 lakh by a Mumbai man she met through a matrimonial website, police said.

The woman, who works at a private firm, became acquainted with the accused, identified as 29-year-old Ajay Amol Patil, earlier this year. According to her complaint, Patil proposed marriage after the two got to know each other.

The alleged fraud came after he gained her trust.

Police said Patil told the woman that he could help her obtain club membership cards. He allegedly asked her to share personal financial documents, including her salary slips and PAN card details.

According to the complaint, the documents were then allegedly used to secure a loan of Rs 6,09,500 in the woman's name.

Woman allegedly told to transfer loan money

After the loan was sanctioned, Patil allegedly instructed the woman to transfer the amount into several different bank accounts.

The woman reportedly transferred the money as directed, believing she would get the funds back.

However, Patil allegedly failed to return the money. The woman subsequently approached the police and accused him of cheating her.

The case highlights how personal documents shared with someone met through a matrimonial platform can allegedly be misused to obtain financial facilities in another person's name.

Police register cheating case

Based on the woman's complaint, police registered a case against Patil under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with cheating, along with relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act.

The investigation is underway.
