Mumbai: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed the state government to sign Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with charitable organisations working to support patients and their relatives visiting major hospitals across Maharashtra.

Thousands of patients and their family members visit major hospitals every day for treatment, often facing difficulties related to the high cost of healthcare, accommodation, food and lack of proper guidance. The initiative aims to bring government agencies, charitable trusts and voluntary organisations together to create a streamlined and transparent support system.

Under the proposed agreements, assistance provided by charitable hospitals and voluntary organisations will be made available to patients and their relatives in a coordinated manner. Hospitals functioning under the Charity Commissioner already provide free or concessional treatment to poor and needy patients. The Chief Minister’s Medical Assistance Cell will be integrated with this existing system to improve coordination and transparency.

The initiative will also strengthen arrangements for affordable or free accommodation and meals for patients’ relatives, besides providing medical guidance and assistance in and around hospital premises. The government said the objective is to reduce the difficulties faced by ordinary citizens while accessing healthcare and simplify administrative procedures.

The collaboration is expected to combine the resources and services of charitable organisations with the government’s administrative network, creating a more effective healthcare support model for needy patients in Maharashtra.

Various tripartite MoUs will be signed with the cooperation of charitable trusts to ensure that assistance reaches beneficiaries directly and without unnecessary delays.

Fadnavis has appealed to charitable trusts, voluntary organisations and other institutions working in the healthcare sector to participate in the initiative and help expand support services for patients and their families.

The government said the move is expected to provide significant relief to thousands of poor and needy patients and their relatives visiting major hospitals across the state.
