Uphold Bar standards

Lawyers have played a significant role in modern India, in shaping our society and polity, particularly during the freedom struggle and after Independence (Front page, “Not a good sign if a Bar Council loses respect: SC judge”, August 30). Many stalwarts have graced the higher judiciary, conducted themselves with the utmost dignity, upheld professional values, and brought respect to the Bar. The Bar Council of India has also largely done well in regulating the legal profession and maintaining professional standards. However, recent developments have caused dismay within the legal community and beyond. The widely criticised decision directing the State Bar Councils to halt the enrolment of the NALSAR 2026 batch, and its subsequent reversal, have cast the Bar Council of India in a poor light. The call by Supreme Court judge Justice B.V. Nagarathna urging the Bar Councils to “introspect on their role and importance in upholding professional ethics, morality and professional competence” is timely. The Bar Councils should take note of this.

No country above the law

If Russia’s actions against Ukraine and Iran’s actions against Kuwait are condemned, why should similar conduct by the United States be treated differently?

Venezuela is a sovereign nation, not an American colony whose natural resources can be controlled at Washington’s will. The reported U.S. control over Venezuelan oil raises serious questions about national sovereignty and international law. The United Nations appears to become a “sleeping beauty” whenever a powerful nation acts with impunity. International law must apply equally to every country; no nation should be above it. Otherwise, global institutions risk encouraging dictators who believe that power makes them untouchable.
