GLP-1 drugs create new market for collagen, protein and beauty products in India
Synopsis
The rising use of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs such as Ozempic and Mounjaro is creating a new consumer market in India, with companies developing protein- and fibre-rich foods, nutrition supplements and beauty products aimed at addressing side effects of rapid weight loss.
iStockNew Delhi: Companies are rushing to launch products ranging from foods and beverages to face fillers and collagen skincare supplements to capitalise on the side effects of increasingly popular weight-loss drugs such as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) medications Ozempic and Mounjaro.
"This is the biggest new demand driver beauty has had in a decade, and it's coming out of a pharmacy, not a trend cycle," said Radhika Ghai, founder of premium cosmetics e-commerce platform Kindlife.

With face fillers, supplements and other products, brands cater to widening demand
"When people lose weight this fast, the medication takes facial volume, skin elasticity and hair along with the fat, so everyone who starts a GLP-1 eventually becomes a customer for a very specific set of products, such as barrier repair, collagen-support skincare and firming body care. What makes this different is that demand grows with the patient base, instead of fading with the season."
Rapid weight loss as a side effect of GLP-1 drugs, a group of prescription medicines used to treat type 2 diabetes and support weight loss, not only depletes body fat but also leads to distinct loss of protein and fibre, a gap companies are competing to be the first ones to fill with nutrition-dense foods and make-up.
Sugar Cosmetics and HUL's Lakme are pushing plumping, non-invasive make-up alternatives such as lip fillers.
The India unit of Nestle said it is working through its joint venture with Dr. Reddy's Laboratories to introduce multiple products for people using GLP-1 drugs by addressing nutrition gaps. "The joint venture between Nestle Health Science and Dr. Reddy's Laboratories has taken a significant step in this space with Celevida GLP+ (a nutrition supplement) for people undergoing GLP-1 therapy," said a spokesperson.
Tata Consumer Products is also readying to enter the segment. Its managing director Sunil D'Souza told ET in July that the company was looking to introduce waters and snacks with protein and fibre to help consumers manage weight-loss side effects by supplementing their food intake. "We are working towards how to play in this space where, because of increasing consumption of GLP-1 products, people consume less protein, fibre, prebiotics and probiotics. We are not looking at reducing portion sizes. Instead, over the next 60 days, we will start entering multiple foods and beverages categories to manage weight loss side effects, where consumers are looking to supplement their food intake," he said.
