Synopsis
The BJP is on the verge of completing its organizational reset, emphasizing a fresh leadership team selection. This initiative hints at significant political shifts ahead of the upcoming election cycle, with an emphasis on inclusion of younger leaders and increased representation for women. The reconstitution of the Parliamentary Board, the party's apex decision-making entity, will set the course for the BJP as it approaches the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
AgenciesNew Delhi: The BJP's long-awaited organisational reset is learnt to be in its final stages, with party chief Nitin Nabin set to unveil his organisational team, an exercise widely seen within the party as the beginning of a broader political churn ahead of the next electoral cycle.
More than a routine reshuffle, the exercise is expected to set the tone for a series of key political decisions in the months ahead.
Against that backdrop, Nabin's first organisational team assumes added significance. His own elevation to the party's top post had surprised many within the BJP, and sources do not rule out a few surprise names in the new line-up as well. Sources said only two or three of the existing general secretaries are likely to be retained, signalling a wider restructuring.
Some former Union ministers are also understood to be under consideration for key organisational roles. The new team is expected to blend generational change with organisational experience.
Younger leaders and women are likely to get greater representation, while seasoned hands are expected to ensure continuity. Party insiders said state units have been informally advised that, as far as possible, presidents of BJP's state youth wings should be below 35 years. The emphasis on women is expected to carry a political message. Having amended its constitution to reserve 33% of national office-bearer posts for women, the BJP is expected to ensure that the new team reflects that commitment as it continues to push implementation of the Women's Reservation law through the delimitation exercise. Another closely watched element would be the reconstitution of the Parliamentary Board, the party's highest decision-making body. The previous overhaul under JP Nadda saw leaders such as Nitin Gadkari and Shivraj Singh Chouhan dropped while several relatively low-profile leaders were inducted.
This time, several senior chief ministers, experienced leaders and even some former members are understood to be in contention as the BJP seeks to balance political heft with regional, caste and social representation.
Proposals to expand the national office-bearers' team and assign some Parliamentary Board members regional responsibilities have also figured in the internal discussions. The new organisation is expected to lead the party into the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
